#10 Warriors Close Calendar with Strong Performance at Nassau Open

Alanna Barberio, Emily Klein and Zoe Gress each won their weight class to pace nine medalists.

NASSAU, N.Y. – In its final competition before the holiday season, the 10th ranked East Stroudsburg University women's wrestling team tallied nine medalists and three Warriors earned gold medals at their respective weight class on Sunday at Nassau Community College's Lions' Main Gym.
Taking first-place were Alanna Barberio (109), #7 Emily Klein (116) and #8 Zoe Gress (155). Also medaling were Waverly KaneLong (2nd place, 116), #7 Mia Macaluso (2nd place, 123), Raven McCarthy-Gardner (2nd place, 155), Madeline Ridge (116, 3rd place), Gianna Amendola (4th place, 123) and Felicia Smith (170, 4th place).

Notables
  • Barberio picked up a first place at 109 with a pair of pins over Alvernia's Taylor Bloom, in only other competitor at 109. The Telford, Pa. native pinned Bloom in 28 seconds the first match and picked up the gold medal with a fall at 1:57 in the final round.
  • Klein led an impressive Warrior contingent at 116, as ESU swept the top three spots in the weight class. The Garden State product picked up a pair of pins, before picking up a tech fall over teammate Madeline Ridge and earned gold with a pin in 2:55 over teammate and second-place finisher Waverly Kane-Long. Klein now holds a record of 16-2 and has won 15 consecutive matches.
  • Gress picked up first-place at 155 with three pins, with falls over Nicole Shisler and Gorgeous Lee, both of Delaware Valley. It was a Warrior-Warrior 155 final, as Gress pinned teammate Raven McCarthy-Gardner to secure first-place.
  • KaneLong advanced to the first-place match against eventual champion Klein with two falls (Maia Di Scala & Hannah Ung) and a tech fall over teammate Madeline Ridge to face Klein in the final. Klein picked up a fall at 2:25, as KaneLong settled for second-place.
  • Mia Macaluso picked up a pair of tech falls over unattached Natalia Morales and teammate Carmela Cancelmo, before falling by decision to nationally-ranked #8 Naomi Henry of NJCU.
  • McCarthy-Gardner, like Gress, also tallied falls over the two Del Val wrestlers at 155, before falling to Gress in the first-place match.
  • ESU had multiple medalists at 116 (Klein, 1st; KaneLong, 2nd; Madeline Ridge, 3rd), 123 (Macaluso, 2nd; Amendola, 4th) and 155 (Gress, 1st; McCarthy Gardner, 2nd).
