ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Just over 24 hours after claiming victory in the first-ever women's collegiate wrestling match in New Jersey, the East Stroudsburg women's wrestling team was back on the mat on Monday evening, defeating Elmira, 20-18 at Speidel Gymnasium.
The Warriors improve to 6-2 overall and has found its stride, earning victories in five of its past six matches. The Soaring Eagles fall to 3-6 in their debut season.
Notables
- After a pair of double-forfeits, ESU raced to a 20-0 lead for the second consecutive match. Alanna Barberio picked up a forfeit win to lift ESU to an early lead.
- Emily Klein picked up another victory after sealing the match win over NJCU on Sunday. Klein bested ES's Jessip with a pin to extend the Warrior lead to 10-0.
- After a Carmela Cancelmo forfeit victory at 130, nationally-ranked at 130 Mia Macaluso wrestled up at 136 and remained undefeated at 3-0 following her first collegiate pin.
- After Macaluso's victory, the Soaring Eagles earned four consecutive victories at 143, 155, 170 and 191. Avia Bibeau suffered her first collegiate loss at 155, but sealed the Warriors' sixth win of the season by avoiding getting pinned.
- With the match in hand, EC would pin ESU at 170 and earn a tech fall victory at 191, as the Soaring Eagles comeback came up just short, as ESU held on to the 20-18 win.
- ESU went 4-0 in extra matches over EC, with Cancelmo, Cameron Nunez, Simsic and Cascen earning wins with the match decided.
