WEST CHESTER – The second-ranked East Stroudsburg University field hockey team held on to defeat #6 West Chester, 2-1, in a PSAC game on Tuesday afternoon from Vonnie Gros Field.
The Warriors, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second quarter following goals from senior
Madison Kline and freshman
Minke Klijn, earned their fourth straight victory to move to 14-2 on the season and 7-1 in the PSAC. The Golden Rams slipped to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the conference headed into their final game of the regular season.
ESU has now defeated West Chester in four of the last five meeting dating back to 2021.
Notables
- After a scoreless first quarter, Kline blasted home her ninth goal of the season at the 23:09 mark to put ESU ahead 1-0
- Senior Grace Hoelbinger recorded her first collegiate point as she was credited with the assist on Kline's goal
- Klijn found the back of the cage for the second straight game as the Netherlands native extended the Warriors' lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later (24:55)
- The Golden Rams cut the deficit to 2-1 headed into halftime when Paige Wolfe scored off a pass from Adriana Palumbo
- Goalkeeper Amy Supey was nearly lights out for the Warriors as the senior recorded six saves in 60 minutes to notch her 49th career victory
- In a tightly contested battle between PSAC rivals, the Golden Rams finished with the slight edge in shots (14-13) and penalty corners (6-5), but shots on goal were dead even (7-7)
- Sandy Miller continued to near 500 career victories as the 39th-year head coach notched her 493rd win this afternoon
- The Warriors, who have clinched a PSAC Tournament berth for the 10th consecutive season, can lock up the No. 1 seed on Saturday with a victory over IUP
- Despite receiving 12 of the 18 first-place votes, the Warriors held steady at No. 2 in today's NFHCA Division II National Coaches Poll with 164 points, trailing #1 Shippensburg (165) by one point
- The second edition of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rankings are scheduled to be released on Wednesday
