PREVIEW: ESU Women’s Soccer vs. West Chester

EAST STROUDSBURG – The PSAC East No. 3 seed East Stroudsburg University women’s soccer team opens postseason play at PSAC East No. 2 seed West Chester on Monday afternoon in the PSAC Quarterfinal round. The contest at Rockwell Field is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.

GAME NOTES

Last Time at WCU: The Warriors and Golden Rams clash for the third time this season, with each home team earning a win in the regular season. WCU earned a 1-0 win at Rockwell Field on Sept. 9, following Faither Matter finding the back of the net for the lone goal during the 68th minute of action. 

Last Time at ESU: The Warriors sought revenge on Homecoming on Oct. 7, with ESU taking down the Golden Rams by a score of 3-0. After a WCU own-goal in the first half, Caitlin Norwood and Millie Smith added second half goals in ESU’s first win over WCU since 2019 and its first at Eiler-Martin Stadium since 2012. 

PSAC Tournament History: The Warriors look to lift the PSAC Championship trophy for the seventh time in program history and seek its first since 2017. The Warriors hold a 19-9-4 record in the PSAC Tournament. ESU saw its season come to an end with a 2-0 loss at Rockwell Field at the PSAC Quarterfinals a season ago. WCU advaned all the way to the NCAA Championship game.

About the Warriors: The Warriors closed the regular season with a 10-4-4 overall record with an 8-4-4 PSAC East record. ESU’s offense is led by Natalie Schooley’s 21 points (9 goals, 3 assists), while Millie Smith (5 goals, 2 assists, 12 points) and Rebeca Kotula (4 goals, 1 assist, nine points) supplement. ESU’s offense ranks fifth of 18 teams in the PSAC with 1.83 goals per game, while the Warrior defense ranks fourth in goals allowed with only .67 goals allowed per contest. 

Brick Wall: Emmy Clarkson has put together an impressive sophomore season, which includes nine shutouts, which leads the PSAC and ranks 12th nationally among all goalkeepers in NCAA Division II. 

About the Golden Rams: WCU enters the contest with an 11-3-3, 11-3-2 PSAC East record.  Faith Matters leads the offense with eight goals and eight assists for 24 points, while Alyson Cutter (6 goals, 2 assists, 14 points) and Jacqueline Hug (3 goals, 6 assists, 12 points) have all produced 10-plus points for WCU.  In goal, Grace Keen is the leader, allowing just 14 goals in 18 games, and recording eight shutouts. 

Up Next:  The winner between ESU and West Chester advances to the PSAC Semifinals, which will be hosted at the highest remaining seed in the PSAC East. The ESU-WCU winner will face the victor of No. 1 PSAC West seed Mercyhurst and No. 4 seed Seton Hill at the highest-remaining seed in the PSAC East on Fri.,  Nov. 11. 3 p.m. on NCAA.com
