ESU Takes Third at NCWWC Region 1 Championships, Six Warriors Advance to Nationals

ERIE, Pa. – Led by a pair of NCWWC Region 1 Championship first-place finished from Emily Klein and Sofia Macaluso, the No. 9 ESU women's wrestling team took third place in the team standings and advanced six Warriors qualifying for nationals on Saturday afternoon Gannon's Recreation and Wellness Center.

Along with Klein and Sofia Macaluso, Haley Delia (4th place, 101), Mia Macaluso (3rd place, 123) Zoe Gress (4th place, 143) and Shola Cascen (4th place, 191) all qualified in their respective weight class to advance to the NCWWC National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 4th.

Notables
  • Emily Klein becomes the first Warrior to repeat at regionals, taking first-place at 116 after earning first-place at 123 in 2021-22. She picked up wins via tech fall, decision and pin before earning a 5-2 decision in the first-place match over Nohea Moniz of Sacred Heart.
  • Sofia Macaluso cruised with a pair of byes before pinning her sister and teammate Mia Macaluso. In the first-place match, she picked up a pin over Naomi Henry in 4:51 to seal the regional championship.
  • After a pin and loss to her sister, Mia Macaluso bounced back with a pin in 35 seconds and an 8-1 decision victory in the third-place match Kalli Roskos to book her ticket to Iowa.
  • Haley Delia picked up a tech fall, before falling to Aaliyah Payne-Parris by fall. She bounced back with a pin, before falling to Skylynn Tomlinson in the third-place match.
  • Zoe Gress picked up a pair of falls before suffering a loss Teumi Sanusi of Sacred Heart. She bounced back in the consolation bracket with a 10-5 decision win over Del Val's Olivia Kinder. She dropped the third-place match by a 4-3 decision to settle for fourth place.
  • Shola Cascen is headed to nationals for the third time in three seasons. She fell in her opening match before picking up a fall and injury default. She dell to Tayana Labady by fall in the third-place match.
  • Waverly KaneLong took fourth place at 116, but fell to Jocelyn Lass in the quarterfinal in the true fourth-place match. Raven McCarthy suffered a similar fate, with a loss to Selena Siftuentes Shaffer of Sacred Heart.
