STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University softball team extended its winning streak to seven, with a pair of wins against Dominican N.Y. on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Creekview Park's Vigon International Field.
The Warriors (13-7, 1-1 PSAC) close the non-conference slate with a 13-7 record, while the Chargers drop to 3-15 after the sweep.
Notables
- Pacing ESU at the plate was Reilly Vicendese, who batted .600 on the day with three doubles and five RBIs. She scored four of ESU's 19 runs on the day and stole all three bases that she attempted. She has now hit safely in 11 consecutive contests. She raised her batting average to .446.
- Brooke McKeown also contributed three hits from the leadoff spot, scoring three runs. She extended her hitting streak to 14 in the contest. She ties teammate, Reilly Vicendese (2021) and Ashley Miller (2006) for the second-longest hitting streak since 2002.
- Jada Smallwood smacked a pair of hits including her second home run of the season in game two, totaling three RBIs.
- Molly Nies, Denva Shaw-Tait and Maddy Pritchard all produced a pair of RBIs for ESU. Nies registered an inside-the-park homerun.
- In the circle, Paige Zigmund (W, 6-2) picked up her sixth win with a five-inning shutout in game one. She allowed just four hits and struck out eight Chargers. She held DUNY to a .211 batting average, allowing just one extra-base hit. Leigh Ann Jenkins (W, 3-1) earned the game two win, allowing six hits and two earned runs (6 total), while striking-out four in 6.2 innings. Pritchard got the final out in game two.
- ESU batted .364 on the afternoon, smacking 16 hits, which includes 11 extra-base hits.
How It Happened – ESU 9, Dominican 0
- After Zigmund set down the side in order, the Warriors recorded three runs in its first at bats. Reilly Vicendese posted an RBI double and later scored after stealing third and a throwing error by the catcher. Shaw-Tait closed the frame with an RBI double for the Warriors' third run.
- The Chargers looked to put up a run in the top of the 2nd, with two singles, but Zigmund was able to strand both to keep the shutout intact. ESU added two runs in the bottom half, with a clutch two-out RBI double from Reilly Vicendese to extend the advantage to 5-0.
- After a scoreless third frame, ESU lengthened its edge to 7-0, after an inside-the-park home run from Nies, as McKeown also scored on the play. Later on in the frame, Smallwood recorded a triple and scored on the play with an outfield throwing error. Vicendese also scored on the play, as the Warriors took a 9-0 lead.
- Needing two runs to extend the game in the top of the 5th, Dominican was able to start the inning strong with a double, but Zigmund was able to keep the shutout intact for her fifth win of the season.
- ESU improves its record to 10-2 at Creekview Park on the season.
How It Happened – ESU 10, Dominican 6
- After not tallying a run in the first contest, the Chargers put up a pair of runs in the top of 1st. After a fielding error and a fielder's choice put a pair of runners on base. An RBI double from Madison Walker lifted DUNY to a 2-0 edge to start the second contest. The Warriors could not counter in the bottom half of the first frame.
- The contest remained scoreless until Smallwood blasted a leadoff solo homerun to left field to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. The Warriors were not done scoring, adding runs with an RBI double from Pritchard, along with a run on a wild pitch. Suddenly, ESU led 3-2 after four innings of action.
- The Warriors added to its lead in the bottom of the 5th, with help by a Charger error. Vicendese scored on a throwing error, while Weirich crossed the plate on a sac bunt from Denva Shaw-Tait. ESU took a 6-2 lead into the sixth inning after a RBI triple off the bat of Pritchard.
- The Chargers got a run back instantly with a solo home run off the bat off Giovanna Salcido, to make it a 6-3 contest.
- The Warriors expanded its advantage to seven after a four-run bottom of the 6th. Lexi Wright scored a run on a wild pitch, while Vicendese smacked a two-RBI double to score both Nies and McKeown. A sac bunt by Smallwood resulted in the final run of the frame and game for ESU.
- Trailing by seven in its final at bats, DUNY made the contest interesting, with an RBI double and a two-RBI double, slicing the deficit to four at 10-6. Maddy Pritchard got the final out with a strikeout to end the contest.
