Volleyball Moves Past D’Youville in Straight Sets

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team opened the D'Youville University Tournament with a sweep of the Saints on Friday evening inside the College Center. The set scores were 25-19, 25-14 and 25-21.

With their second straight victory, the Warriors improved to 2-3, while the Saints fell to 1-5 following their second loss of the day.

Notables vs. D'Youville
  • Sophomore Anna Coulter led ESU with a team-high 11 kills as well as three digs and four blocks
  • Graduate student Claire Choloux finished shy of a double-double with nine kills and 13 digs to go along with two assists and one ace
  • Redshirt senior Kaylee LoPresto (eight kills, eight digs) and senior Sydney Stone (seven kills, four digs) combined for 15 kills and 12 digs
  • After missing the previous two matches, junior Taylor Haan recorded a game-high 31 assists, eight digs, three blocks and two aces
  • Senior Makayla Baca finished with 22 digs and two aces
  • The Warriors recorded a .252 hitting percentage (40 kills, 12 errors) compared to a .043 clip (27 kills, 22 errors) for the Saints
How it Happened vs. D'Youville
  • D'Youville began the first set and match with a 4-1 lead but ESU responded quickly with a 7-3 run to grab an 8-7 edge. The Warriors kept it rolling, scoring five of the next six points to increase their advantage to 13-8. After the teams traded the next six points, the Saints ripped off a 4-0 run to pull within one at 16-15. With D'Youville still trailing by one (17-16), the Warriors produced a 6-1 run to give themselves a 23-17 cushion. ESU ultimately closed out the set, 25-19, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • With the score tied at 4-4 early in the second set, the Warriors went on a 4-0 run to grab an 8-4 lead. Following a Saints' timeout, ESU kept it rolling as the Warriors used a 9-3 spurt to push their advantage to 17-7. The teams swapped the next 15 points with ESU wrapping up the set, 25-14, to extend their edge to 2-0.
  • D'Youville and ESU traded the first 16 points of the third set until the Warriors ripped off a 5-0 run to jump in front 13-8. The Saints answered back with a 5-2 spurt to get within two points at 15-13, until ESU scored six of the next seven points, including five straight, to pull ahead 21-14. The Saints battled back to make the score 23-20 but the Warriors finished the set, 25-21, to sweep the match.
Up Next
The Warriors are right back inside the College Center tomorrow for matches against West Liberty and Lake Erie. ESU is tentatively scheduled to play at noon and 5 p.m.
