Gress Earns NCWWC Region 1 Championship, Eight Book Trips to Nationals

ESU earned third place as a team and ESU Head Coach Anibal Nieves was honored as NCWWC Region 1 Coach of the Year

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Highlighted by an NCWWC Region 1 title at 130 lbs. by Zoe Gress, No. T-20 East Stroudsburg University women's wrestling team took third place of 12 teams in the NCWWC Region 1 Championships at Thomas Fieldhouse.

In addition to Gress's regional championship, seven other Warriors placed in the top four of their respective weight classes to earn a spot at the NCWWC National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, beginning on March 8th. Olivia Klein and Mia Macaluso both took runner-up honors at 101 and 123. Additional Warriors that will represent ESU at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse include: Alanna Barberio (4th place), Emily Klein (116, 3rd place), Jackeline Ramos-Oviedo (123, 3rd place), Ruth Ansah (136, 3rd place) and Jade Huerta (170, 4th place).
 


Following the championships, ESU head coach Anibal Nieves was named the NCWWC Region 1 Coach of the Year.

Gress recorded three tech falls, before pinning Lock Haven's Lily Sherer at the 1:49 mark to seal the regional title. Since the first regional in 2022, the Warriors have now had four wrestlers combine for five regional titles in Emily Klein (123 '22, 116, '23), Avia Bibeau (143, 2022), Sofia Macaluso (123, 2023) and now Gress (130, 2024).

A total of 14 of 15 of ESU's wrestlers placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes. Other Warriors that placed include Tiana Savino (5th, 109), Natalie Dunn (6th, 116), Angelina Hiller (8th, 143), Carney Wyble (6th, 143), Damiana Racciatti (8th, 155) and Kali Shifflett (8th, 191).

Sacred Heart won the regional, compiling 203 team points. Tournament host Lock Haven took second place with 154 points, while the Warriors followed close behind with 142 points. Elmira (106.5 pts.) and Delaware Valley (78.5 pts.) round out the top five.
