Season Preview: ESU Volleyball

EAST STROUDSBURG The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team begins its 50th season as a varsity sponsored sport on Friday, when the Warriors travel to Ohio for the Ashlan ad University Invitational. The Warriors will face West Liberty (10:00 a.m.) and Nova Southeastern (2:00 p.m.) on Friday, before taking on D’Youville (10:00 a.m.) and tournament host Ashland on Saturday (2:00 p.m.).

Who’s Back: AVCA All-America Honorable Mention Anna Coulter is back after earning All-PSAC East, AVCA and D2CAA All-Region First Team honors. The PSAC East Athlete of the Year was among the PSAC's best in a handful of different categories including first in hitting percentage (0.407), fifth in points per set (4.23), seventh in aces per set (0.48), eighth in kills per set (3.22), eighth in total aces (48), 10th in total kills, 11th in blocks per set (0.85) and 12th in total blocks. Setter Taylor Haan joined Coulter on the All-PSAC East First Team a season ago and returns for her senior season. She led the Warriors with 911 assists, 52 aces, 247 digs and 47 blocks. Makaela McComas also returns as a starter from the 2023 squad.

New Warriors: ESU welcomes 11 new Warriors to the roster in 2024 in Danica Becerril, Allison Birtcil, Kelly Crites, Mariah Dennis, Hanna Garrison, Cailey Jones, Katalin Kovacs, KiLee Kuhlman, Allison Oberlin-Pope, Natalie Small and Taylor Wise. A total of seven newcomers enter their freshman season, while Birtcil (Glendale CC, Jones (Felician), Kovacs (Southern New Hampshire), and Wise (West Georgia) all look to make an impact as transfers. 

The Coach: The Warriors are guided by head coach Tricia Melfy, who enters her fourth season leading ESU. She holds an ESU record of 55-32 and has totaled a career record of 95-75. Under her watch, the Warriors posted a 22-7 record in 2023, including a 17-match winning streak. 

Preseason Poll: ESU was predicted to finish third in the PSAC East in the annual coaches poll. Shippensburg garnered five of the eight first-place votes, Shepherd earned a first-place tally in second and the Warriors collected a pair of first-place votes in third. Behind ESU in the poll was West Chester (4th), Lock Haven (5th), Bloomsburg (6th), Kutztown (7th) and Millersville (8th).
