Field Hockey Wins Double Overtime Thriller Against Bloomsburg

10/14/2025 7:19:00 PM

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — The East Stroudsburg field hockey team hit the road Tuesday evening to take on No. 6 Bloomsburg in a double overtime thriller. The Warriors eked out a win with a late goal from Maddie Moline to narrowly defeat the Huskies, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Huskies got the first chance of the game in the opening five minutes. Kate Ferguson chipped the ball past her defender to give Genna Bush a look, but Bush's shot went wide off the post and out of bounds.
  • With a little over four minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Warriors were awarded a penalty corner. Lisa Pasman took it for East Stroudsburg, passing it to Alex Eagles at the top of the arc. Eagles stepped inside and shot wide of the net, allowing Bella Viruet to redirect it past traffic for the game's first goal.
  • ESU had a pair of opportunities off penalty corners to double its lead early in the third quarter, but Bloomsburg's defense held strong. For the first chance, Hannah Schmittinger took the long-distance shot that was stopped by Bloomsburg's Maura Greek, and Piper Patrick drew another corner as she was unable to get a clean shot off the rebound. On the second corner, Schmittinger took another shot from the top of the arc, looking for another goal by deflection. Puck de Ruiter got it on target, but Greek was there to make the stop.
  • The Huskies converted on a penalty corner with five minutes remaining in the third quarter to even the game at 1-1. Alexandra Bliss received the corner pass and dropped it behind for Sophie Lawler, scoring off an elevated shot down the left side.
  • In an eight-minute span, the Warriors went from leading by a goal to trailing by one. Three minutes into the fourth quarter, the Huskies pushed down the middle of the field while down a player and got a pass in behind the Warriors back line. Jessica Serafin saved the ball from going out of bounds by centering it to the front of the net, where Lexy Freed settled it and finished the chance to put Bloomsburg in the lead.
  • With 4:42 remaining in regulation, the Warriors were knocking on the door to tie the game. Pasman took another penalty corner, sending it this time to Kerry Kaufman. Kaufman took one touch before sending it towards the net, where Patrick got a stick on the shot to beat Greek and even the score.
  • With the clock racing toward zeros, Serafin got free for a mini-breakaway, but Sydney Pope made a save with 43 seconds remaining to force overtime.
  • The game would require double overtime after neither team could capitalize in the first 10 minutes, but the Warriors had firm control throughout the extra periods. East Stroudsburg was awarded a corner three minutes into the second overtime, and Elaiana Rivera-Lagalla took a shot that was blocked off the initial pass. However, Rivera-Lagalla got the ball back in the middle of the arc, went right, and shot again towards the left post. Maddie Moline was open on the back post, able to deflect the shot in for the game-winning goal with 6:50 remaining.
NOTABLES
  • The Warriors had not played in overtime since defeating Bloomsburg in its first game of the NCAA Tournament, when they beat the Huskies 1-0. It's the first double overtime game East Stroudsburg played in since the NCAA Tournament Semifinals in 2019.
  • Pope was in net for the Warriors, playing the entire game. Pope had played three full games this season prior to tonight, setting a career high in playing time with 73:10.
  • Patrick's goal was the first of her career, making her the 14th different player to score a goal for the Warriors this season.
