PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Opens 2026 With Two Road Matchups

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The East Stroudsburg women's basketball team opens the new year with road matchups at California (Pa.) on Friday and Slippery Rock on Saturday.

EAST STROUDSBURG NOTES 

  • After an 11-day break, ESU begins the 2026 portion of its season with a nonconference matchup at California (Pa.) on Friday before traveling to Slippery Rock on Saturday.
  • Due to the uneven number of teams in both basketball divisions, the California (Pa.) contest will not count towards ESU's conference record, however it will count towards California's.
  • Consecutive starters for the Warriors have been Lacie KringeAvery WhiteBrooke DroegeBrie Droege, and Caitlin Marten
  • Brooke Droege was named the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week on Nov. 18 after she combined eight steals, three blocks, 15 rebounds, 35 points, and averaged 37 minutes a game over the weekend.    
  • The Warriors are averaging 65.2 PPG, 37.9 RPG, 15.6 APG, 12.1 SPG, and are shooting 39.1% from the field.  
  • Despite ranking 14th in the conference in scoring offense, the Warriors sit fifth in scoring defense, holding opponents to 59.5 points per game.
  • ESU ranks fourth in the PSAC in steals per game (12.1), led by Devine, who averages 2.7 steals and has recorded seven games with three or more.
  • Brie paces the Warriors with 13.7 points per game and has notched five games of 15 or more points.
  • Brooke leads the team on the boards with 5.4 rebounds per game, including 3.7 defensive rebounds per contest.
  • Four ESU starters are averaging double figures in scoring this season.
  • The Warriors are 3-1 on the road and remain undefeated when leading at halftime.
  • Seven of ESU's 10 games have been decided by 10 points or fewer, with the Warriors owning a 5-2 edge in those contests.

SERIES HISTORY 

  • ESU last faced California (Pa.) on Dec. 7, 2024, in East Stroudsburg, with the Vulcans earning a 69-63 victory. Kringe tied the game at 63 with 1:40 remaining, but Cal U closed on a seven-point run to seal the win.
  • The Warriors most recently played Slippery Rock on Dec. 21, 2024, at Koehler Fieldhouse and earned a 60-45 victory. The Warriors used a strong 40-point first half to jump ahead before both teams scored 20 throughout the second half.  
  • Overall, the Warriors are 6-21 all-time against the Vulcans and 10-14 versus the Rock. ESU has dropped six straight games to Cal U but is 2-3 in its last five meetings with Slippery Rock.

CALIFORNIA (Pa.) NOTES 

  • California (Pa.) enters the matchup with a 7-7 overall record and a 3-1 mark in conference play.
  • The Vulcans rank 10th in the PSAC in both scoring offense and scoring defense, averaging 66.6 points per game while allowing 68.7.
  • California (Pa.) ranks sixth in the conference in team field goal percentage (.423). 
  • The Vulcans have two players in the top 15 in average scoring. Both Alicia Young and Kennedy Bankett average 13.8 points per game and have combined six games with 20-point performances.  
  • Kimaya Williams ranks sixth in the conference in rebounding at 8.5 per game. She has started all 14 contests, posted two double-doubles, and grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds on Nov. 15. 

SLIPPERY ROCK NOTES 

  • Slippery Rock comes into the weekend with a 5-5 overall record and is 3-1 in conference play.
  • The Rock will host Bloomsburg on Friday before facing East Stroudsburg on Saturday.
  • SRU ranks 12th in the PSAC in scoring offense at 66.1 points per game and ninth in scoring defense, allowing 67.9.
  • Slippery Rock averages 4.5 blocks per game, ranking fourth in the conference.
  • The Rock has three players ranked among the PSAC's top 25 scorers.
  • Kayley Joseph-Bernard ranks fourth in the conference in rebounds per game (9.9) and second in blocked shots, averaging 2.3 per contest.
  • Iyanna Wade ranks second in the PSAC and 15th nationally with an average of 5.0 assists per game.
