FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of straight-set matches on the second day of the Fairmont State Volleyball Classic, falling to Anderson and host Fairmont State.
Anderson
KiLee Kuhlman led the team with seven kills, while both
Selena Hochendoner and
Hannah McInerney added five apiece.
Harry Berry and
Georgia Stevens each recorded two service aces.
Set 1: Anderson jumped out to a 5-1 advantage before the Warriors battled back to within one at 8-7. Kills from
Leah Novatne and
Natalie Smalle ended a 5-0 run by the Trojans, 14-10. Anderson stayed ahead and eventually built a 10-point lead before taking the first set 25-15.
Set 2: Anderson opened with an 11-2 run in the second set. A late 4-0 run cut ESU's deficit to 21-13, however the Trojans finished the set with a 4-1 run.
Set 3: The Warriors maintained the lead through much of the third set, holding an 18-15 advantage. Anderson battled back to even the score at 18-18. Two kills from Ruggiero helped ESU remain close, but the Trojans scored the final two points to complete the sweep with a 25-23 victory.
Fairmont State
Jadyn Orava led the team with 12 kills, Kuhlman added five, and Ruggiero rounded out the top three contributors with four kills.
Set 1: ESU opened the match with a four-point lead before the Fighting Falcons used an 8-0 run to take a 17-13 advantage. Consecutive service aces from Ruggiero brought the Warriors within one at 18-17. Fairmont State responded with a 4-0 run to extend its lead to 22-17, but ESU stayed within reach after a 3-0 run made it 22-20. The Fighting Falcons closed the set with a 3-1 run to take the opener, 25-21.
Set 2: Orava opened the second set with back-to-back kills, while additional kills from Kuhlman and Berry brought the Warriors within one at 5-4. Fairmont State maintained control throughout the set, winning 25-13.
Set 3: Fairmont State opened with an early 4-2 lead before a kill from Orava and an attacking error tied the score at 4-4. Fairmont State then used a 6-0 run to build a 13-6 advantage. Orava recorded four kills in the set, while Ruggiero added three, but the Fighting Falcons remained in control and completed the sweep with a 25-12 win in the final set.
Jadyn Orava was named to the Fairmont State Volleyball All-Classic All-Tournament Team.
