EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Paul Wagner has been named the Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week at East Stroudsburg University after breaking his own school record in the weight throw at the Kutztown Invitational last weekend.
Wagner (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley) had a throw of 62-3 1/4 to break his old mark of 61-4 3/4 which he set as a junior. Wagner is the two-time defending PSAC champion in the event. He also won the shot put at Kutztown with a mark of 49-6 1/2.
He earned his first career All-America honor in the hammer throw during the 2009 outdoor season and went to the NCAA indoor championships in the weight throw last spring, placing ninth to finish one spot out of All-America consideration.
He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team last year. His throw of 196-9 in the hammer at the NCAA Championships set the ESU and PSAC records in the event and was sixth in the nation. He also holds the PSAC championship meet record in the hammer at 190-3, and has won the last two conference titles.
