Kocis Named Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week
EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior forward Brittany Kocis has been named East Stroudsburg University's Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week after leading the Warriors to three wins last week.
Kocis (Mechanicsville/Central Bucks East) was also named the PSAC East Athlete of the Week and had two goals and four assists as the Warriors improved to improved to 10-0 on the season, the longest winning streak in school history.
Senior Jessica Frantz, the top scorer in Division II, received the PSAC East honor the first four weeks of the season. Frantz scored goals in two of ESU’s three games last week to run her season total to 20 goals, while Kocis ranks among the national leaders with nine assists in her first nine games.
Kocis had a goal and two assists in both of the Warriors’ PSAC wins last week against teams ranked in the top five in Division II. ESU finished the week with a 2-0 win over Limestone (S.C.) on Sunday.
The senior scored ESU’s first goal and assisted on the other two goals in a 3-2 win at Bloomsburg on Saturday, marking the team’s first win over the four-time defending national champion Huskies since 2005. Her goal gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead 7:30 into the game, and she assisted on the eventual game-winner by sophomore Alyson Becker with 14:39 remaining.
Kocis played a role in three of ESU’s four second-half goals in a 5-2 win over Kutztown on Wednesday, notching assists on goals by Becker and Frantz and scoring three minutes after the Golden Bears cut the deficit to 3-1 midway through the second half.
Kocis’ goal against Bloomsburg was the 20th of her career and gives the three Kocis sisters – Nicole (2001-04), Ashley (2003-06) and Brittany (2007-10) – a total of 80 career goals for the Warriors. Nicole was an all-conference midfielder and had four goals and 14 assists, and Ashley was the nation’s leading scorer in 2006 and has a school record 56 goals to go with 13 assists. Brittany has added 17 assists to her career scoring total.
The Warriors will wait until Saturday to put their undefeated record on the line against Mercyhurst at 1 p.m. at Whitenight Field. The next divisional game for the PSAC East leaders is Saturday, Oct. 16 at Millersville.
