Mayer Named ESU's Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week

EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Lynn Mayer and junior Ian Melhorn have been recognized as PSAC Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for their school record performances for East Stroudsburg University at the Bucknell Heptagonal on Saturday. Mayer is also ESU's Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week.

Mayer (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville) attained the NCAA automatic qualifying mark and tying the school record at 5-9 1/4 in the high jump to earn the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. The performance ranks No. 3 in Division II this season and guarantees Mayer her sixth career trip to the NCAA Championships.

A four-time All-American and the defending PSAC indoor and outdoor champion, Mayer tied the school record set by her coach, Karen (Way) Gaita, at the 1991 NCAA indoor championships. Mayer tied for second indoors and tied for third outdoors at last year’s NCAA Championships and was also a two-time All-American as a freshman. Gaita was second indoors and won the NCAA championship outdoors in 1991 to earn her third and fourth All-America honors.

Melhorn (York/Eastern York), the Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, hit the NCAA provisional mark in winning the 200m, set the school record in the 60m dash and ran the second leg on the fastest 4x400m relay in the PSAC so far this season to cap a busy day at Bucknell.

His time of 22.20 seconds in the 200m is the fastest in the PSAC and 15th-fastest in the nation this year. He lowered the 60m dash record, held by teammate Asher Ashfield, by one-hundredth of a second to 7.03 seconds and placed fourth in the event.

The 4x400m relay clocked a time of 3:23.25, almost two seconds faster than the No. 2 time in the conference. Three-quarters of last year’s PSAC champion indoor and outdoor 4x400m relays return in Melhorn and seniors Negus Graham and Greg Pammer, with freshman Keith Parker-Washington replacing six-time PSAC champion Chris Reddick. Ashfield, Melhorn, Reddick and Andrew McCloskey earned All-America status in the outdoor 4x100m relay last season.

Shippensburg’s Erica Hess is the Women’s Track Athlete of the Week and Millersville’s Brendon Thomas was named the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. ESU’s Trina Carito had last week’s top field performance for the women with her NCAA provisional score in the pentathlon.
