Al McCormick

Enters 15th Season In 2025   2 All-PSAC Selections

Al McCormick enters his 13th year as head coach of the women's golf program at his alma mater in 2023-24.

The Warriors have had two All-PSAC honorees during McCormick's first 10 seasons leading the Warriors' golf program. Samantha Miller landed on the second team in 2017-18 after earning first team All-PSAC accolades the year prior. She placed in the top 20 at the PSAC Championships in each of her final three seasons with the program.

The Warriors placed seventh in the team standings three out of the last six seasons at the PSAC Championship tournaments. Junior Micaela Crines earned her second straight top 20 finish at the championships during the 2019-20 season to help the Warriors finish in eighth.

In 2018-19, the Warriors finished seventh at PSAC's and earned their first tournament victory in three years by one-stroke at the ESU Invitational. Senior Caterina Daniels also recorded the first known hole-in-one in program history that season.

Their top team showing in 2017-18 was a runner-up performance at the fall ESU Invitational at Glen Brook Golf Club. Miller (t-3), Caterina Daniels (8th) and Micaela Crines (9th) all placed in the top 10 individually.

The golf program has excelled in the classroom under McCormick, earning the top cumulative team GPA in ESU's athletic department in each of the past two academic years. The Warriors' team GPA of 3.68 was also tops among all PSAC golf programs for the 2016-17 academic year.

TENNIS

McCormick transitioned out his role as the head coach of the women's tennis program during the 2021-22 season.

The Warriors have advanced to the PSAC tournament in each of the last two seasons as the No. 3 seed in the East division. ESU went 3-2 in conference play in 2018, clinching its playoff spot with road victories over Millersville (5-4) and Kutztown (7-2) in the final week of the regular season.

A home win over Kutztown clinched ESU’s PSAC quarterfinal appearance in 2017, as the Warriors returned to the postseason for the first time since 2011. Freshman Marina Zardet was recognized as a second team All-PSAC East performer from the No. 3 singles position; she was the ninth Warrior honored by the conference in a span of 10 years.

McCormick, a 1977 graduate of ESU, is a two-time recipient of the PSAC Coach of the Year award. He was named the top women's coach in 2008 and was honored by his coaching peers on the men's side following his first year in 2004. He was the men's tennis coach for the final eight years of the program until it was discontinued as a varsity sport following the 2010-11 season.

ESU had two consecutive PSAC East Athletes of the Year in Katie D'Ambrosia (2011) and Amanda Kaufman (2012), who both received the award in their senior seasons. Kaufman was a four time All-PSAC East selection in singles and had 49 career wins, including 41 at No. 1 singles where she started for 3 1/2 years.

The Warriors' women's team made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2010. The squad, led by Kaufman and the doubles pairing of D'Ambrosia and Jamie Ferrigno, posted a 14-8 regular season record and lost to Mercyhurst in the first round of the postseason. Kaufman and D'Ambrosia were All-PSAC East in singles and D'Ambrosia and Ferrigno earned the third of their four straight all-conference accolades in doubles. D'Ambrosia was also three time All-PSAC East in singles.

D'Ambrosia (2008) and Kaufman (2009) received back-to-back PSAC East Freshman of the Year awards and the 2009 squad went 10-10 and qualified for the PSAC playoffs for the first time. Kaufman, D'Ambrosia and Ferrigno also helped the Warriors to the PSAC playoffs in 2011.

In 2013, senior Rabecca Lausch and junior Annie Vega were named to the All-PSAC East team in singles, and Lausch was named an Academic All-American after graduating with a 4.0 GPA as a Biology major. Vega repeated as an All-PSAC East selection in 2014.

In 2015, sophomore Devin Presby was named first team All-PSAC in singles, and juniors Amber Jadus and Kayla Loar were first team All-PSAC in doubles.

The men's squad made consecutive PSAC tournament appearances in 2007 and 2008. Pat Luchowski and Jeff Kurz were named All-PSAC in doubles in 2006 and Derek Tomasino was an All-PSAC singles selection in 2004.

In McCormick's 15 years, the women have a 108-152 record. The men had a 55-91 mark from 2004 through 2011. He was also interim men's head coach in 1978, posting a 10-14 record for a career men's mark of 65-105.

McCormick led ESU to three PSAC titles in 1975, 1976 and 1977 as a top flight tennis player for the Warriors. He won a PSAC individual singles title and played on two conference-winning doubles teams.

After graduating in 1977, McCormick coached the Warriors for one year when long-time coach Dr. Charles Wolbers took a medical leave. He continued his coaching career with the Stroudsburg High School football team for 23 years, the last six as head freshman coach.
