Dr. Greg Shoemaker joins East Stroudsburg University’s wrestling coaching staff for his second season as an assistant coach in 2021-22. A two-time Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association champion and a PSAC title-winner in 1979, Shoemaker was inducted into ESU’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.
Shoemaker is one of only two multiple-time EIWA champions in program history, topping the 126-pound weight class in 1978 and 1979. He was also a NCAA Division I national qualifier in each of those seasons. Shoemaker posted a 94-15-3 career record with 25 pins. He went 53-3-3 in dual competitions.
Coaching experience for Shoemaker includes assistant coach tenures at District XI and state wrestling powers Easton Area and Nazareth Area High Schools under Hall of Fame Coaches Steve Powell and Ray Nunamaker. Shoemaker wrestled at Easton prior to his time at ESU, finishing with a four-year record of 85-12-1. He was a four-time District XI and Northeast Region finalist, claiming three District XI titles and two Northeast Region titles.
In the PIAA State Wrestling Championships, he finished fourth in his junior year and second as a senior. Shoemaker retired from public education after a 34-year stint. He is currently employed by East Stroudsburg University as an adjunct professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education.
