WEST CHESTER - Bill Zwaan threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 14 West Chester to a 30-15 win over East Stroudsburg University in PSAC East football on Saturday night at Farrell Stadium.
Sophomore kicker Greg Knauss did all of the scoring for the Warriors, making five field goals to set a school record. Knauss made four field goals in the first half, including a 30-yard kick on the final play of the half to pull ESU within 14-12 at halftime.
Junior quarterback Tim Roken was 22-for-44 for 282 yards and sophomore Sam Shuman had seven catches for 88 yards for ESU.
West Chester improved to 7-1 and clinched at least a share of the PSAC East championship with a 4-0 record. ESU falls to 2-5 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
Mike Washington (4 catches, 168 yards) caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Zwaan on the first play from scrimmage to give West Chester a 7-0 lead 17 seconds into the game. Knauss made a 45-yard field goal to finish ESU's first possession, a 34-yard kick to make the score 7-6 midway through the first quarter, and a 20-yard kick on the first play of the second quarter to put the Warriors ahead 9-7.
Zwaan hit Cody Clark for an 11-yard score to give the Golden Rams a 14-9 lead with 5:12 left in the half before Knauss tied the school record with his fourth field goal of the game on the play of the half.
A 20-yard touchdown pass from Zwaan to Steve Miller extended the lead to 21-12 and was the only scoring of the third quarter.
Knauss made a 27-yard field goal to bring ESU within 21-15 early in the final period, but the Golden Rams responded with a kickoff return to midfield and Lee Hopkins scored on a 48-yard run on the next play. The extra point was blocked to make the score 27-15, and Alex Walsh added a 33-yard field goal with 5:13 left to set the final margin.
West Chester ran for 222 yards, led by Hopkins (11-90) and Dean Millard (12-77). The Golden Rams defense limited the Warriors to 71 yards of total offense in the second half and sacked Roken five times.
The Warriors will host Bloomsburg on Senior Day at Eiler-Martin Stadium on Saturday at 2 p.m.
