EAST STROUDSBURG - The East Stroudsburg University men's and women's soccer teams are both at the top of the PSAC standings entering their final home game of the regular season against West Chester on Wednesday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The women's game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
The ESU women (11-4-1, 8-2-1) are riding a six-game winning streak and are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games under first-year head coach Rob Berkowitz, a stretch that has taken them from a 3-2 record in the PSAC East on Sept. 17 to the top of the conference entering Wednesday's game. The Warriors will travel to Edinboro for a non-conference game on Saturday to close the regular season.
West Chester (12-2-2, 7-1-2) was ranked No. 1 in the Northeast Region and No. 5 in Division II last week but lost 3-0 at Slippery Rock in a non-conference game on Saturday.
A victory on Wednesday would give the Warriors home-field advantage in the PSAC Tournament as the top seed in the PSAC East, along with a first-round bye.
A West Chester win would give the Golden Rams the top seed in the PSAC East, while a tie would give WCU the opportunity to claim the No. 1 seed with a win at Bloomsburg on Saturday.
The top three teams in the East and West qualify for the playoffs, with the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in each division scheduled to play on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at the highest seed. ESU has already clinched at least the No. 2 seed in the PSAC East.
The semifinals will be held on Friday, Nov. 2 with the final scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 4. The top team remaining in the East will host the final.
On the men's side, the Warriors (15-2-1, 12-2) have already wrapped up one of the top two seeds and a home game in the semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 31, tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. The top four teams in the PSAC qualify for the postseason.
A win or a tie against either West Chester on Wednesday or at Lock Haven on Saturday gives ESU home-field advantage throughout the PSAC Tournament. The men's final will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the highest remaining seed following the semifinals.
ESU has won 12 of the last 15 PSAC championships and has won 14 PSAC titles in 25 years under head coach Jerry Sheska. Sheska also guided the women's soccer program to the first of its two PSAC championships in 1994, when he won both the PSAC men's and women's titles and was named the conference's Coach of the Year in both sports.
