EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior forward Jason Shegda scored the game-winning goal 1:21 into the second overtime on an assist from junior midfielder Nick Greenwood to lift East Stroudsburg University to a 1-0 win over West Chester on Wednesday night.
The win gives ESU the No. 1 seed in the PSAC men's soccer tournament and the opportunity to host the championship game next Saturday (Nov. 3) at Eiler-Martin Stadium if the Warriors win their semifinal game on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ESU is the defending PSAC men's soccer champion and has won 12 of the last 15 conference titles.
Shegda ended the game seconds after sophomore midfielder Toric Robinson nearly scored on a header that was tipped off the crossbar by West Chester keeper Garret Santora. The Warriors played the ball back into the box, and Greenwood found space on the left side and crossed the ball to Shegda, who knocked it home to give ESU its 16th win of the season.
ESU was playing its third straight overtime game after staying out of overtime in its first 16 contests. The Warriors improve to 13-2 in the PSAC and will travel to Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa made two saves on three shots for his fourth shutout of the season.
The game was a physical contest which featured seven yellow cards in the second half and 51 total fouls. ESU held a 13-3 edge in shots and 7-4 advantage in corners, and finally broke through in the second overtime period.
