EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior Roshane Ellison scored the only goal of the game 3:45 into the second overtime to deliver the PSAC men's soccer championship for East Stroudsburg University on Saturday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The victory gives ESU its 19th PSAC championship in school history, and the second straight by a 1-0 score over Lock Haven in double overtime. Kevin Holmes scored the game-winner 1:07 into the second overtime a year ago.
The Warriors have won 15 PSAC championships in 26 seasons under head coach Jerry Sheska, and have won 13 of the last 16 conference titles. ESU improves to 19-2-1 to tie the school record for victories in a season which was held by the 2003 team that finished 19-3-1.
Ellison finished a play started by sophomore Jason Rudder with a run from the right wing, who played the ball across to the near post, and Ellison and slid the ball under the arm of Lock Haven goalkeeper Chad Feerar.
ESU sophomore goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa made five saves, including several impressive plays in the second half, and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
Pokrywa recorded his seventh shutout of the season and has posted four straight shutouts, all by 1-0 scores. He has played 470 minutes since giving up his last goal in the first half of a 1-1 tie at C.W. Post on Oct. 18.
Pokrywa made a save on a shot by Lock Haven defender Phil Liversedge in the final minute of the first half, and turned away All-America candidate Ashley Rosindale on a shot midway through the second half as the Bald Eagles controlled the play for most of the half.
ESU took control of the first overtime period, taking four shots, and had three shots in the second overtime when Ellison ended the game. Lock Haven didn't have a shot on goal in either overtime session.
Feerar had nine saves for Lock Haven as ESU held a 21-10 advantage in shots for the game.
The Warriors will await word from the NCAA for their destination for next week's Northeast Regional. ESU has been ranked No. 1 in the region for the last two weeks. The Division II championship bracket will be released on Monday and posted on www.esu.edu/athletics/ as soon as it is available.
