EAST STROUDSBURG - IUP scored the final 21 points of the game to beat East Stroudsburg University 38-23 in the first night football game in Eiler-Martin Stadium history on Saturday night.
ESU went ahead 23-17 on a 37-yard field goal by sophomore Greg Knauss with 14:08 left in the game, but the Crimson Hawks put together a 62-yard drive to take the lead for good. Andrew Krewatch hit Anthony Rodriguez for a 21-yard touchdown that capped the drive, and the extra point by Craig Burgess gave IUP a 24-23 edge.
Kareem Dutrieuille scored on a 25-yard run with 3:19 remaining to put IUP ahead 31-23, and Terrence Jackson returned a fumble 49 yards for a touchdown to put the game away less than a minute later.
Knauss made a school-record 53-yard field goal at the end of the first half to give ESU a 20-17 advantage at the break, and made three field goals in the game.
The Warriors opened the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Tim Roken to Sam Shuman that was set up by a 71-yard interception return by Steve Van Alstine, who picked off a pass at the three-yard line to thwart IUP's first drive of the game.
IUP answered with two touchdowns, on a seven-yard run by Poohbear McNeal and a six-yard pass from Krewatch to Dan Pickens, to take a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Knauss and Matt McNelis traded field goals to maintain the Crimson Hawks' seven-point edge before Roken hooked up with Shuman for a 65-yard touchdown, their second of the first half, to level the score at 17-17 with 5:41 remaining. Knauss drilled his 53-yard field goal at the gun to give ESU a three-point lead at halftime.
IUP outgained ESU 414-306 for the game and held a 170-32 advantage in rushing yards, led by McNeal (21-103) and Dutrieuille (16-76). Krewatch was 16-for-32 for 244 yards and two touchdowns, and Ken Witter (four catches, 82 yards) and Mychal Skinner (two catches, 62 yards) both made big plays in the passing game.
Roken was 18-for-39 for 259 yards through the air for ESU and also caught a 15-yard pass from tailback Brant Quick. Drew Stem (6-51), Doug Ogden (4-78) and Shuman (3-88, 2 TD) were the top receivers for the Warriors.
Senior inside linebackers Dave Lotier and Jayson Frank made 13 and 12 tackles, respectively, to lead the ESU defense. Jackson had four tackles (2 TFL), a sack and ran back the game-clinching fumble recovery to lead IUP's defensive effort.
ESU has a bye week on Saturday, Sept. 22 and will return to Eiler-Martin Stadium for Family Weekend on Saturday, Sept. 29 against Millersville.
