EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior forward
Chris Bach sent the game into double overtime with a baseline jumper with one second left, and East Stroudsburg University went on to win its 11th straight game with an 88-85 victory over Cheyney in the PSAC East men's basketball opener on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The win gives ESU its longest winning streak since winning 12 straight games in 1942-43. ESU had four streaks of 12 or more wins from 1934-35 to 1942-43, including a school-record 14 victories during the 1940-41 season.
The Warriors led by nine points (66-57) with 3:21 left in regulation before the Wolves stormed back to force overtime. Forward Dominique Curry had seven points and two steals in the final two minutes and blocked Aaron Pinckney's game-winning attempt with three seconds left to send the game into an extra period.
Cheyney led throughout the first overtime, as center Robbie Simpson scored the first six points for the Wolves, who led 73-68 halfway through the extra session.
Bach made two free throws to cut into the lead and sophomore guard Dawud Lyons pulled ESU within 74-72 with a layup with 38 seconds left. The Warriors sent Curry to the line and Pinckney controlled the rebound after the junior missed both free throws.
ESU used a timeout with 21 seconds left and struggled to get into an offensive set, but junior guard Pat Fleury found Bach in the corner for the jumper which sent the game to double overtime tied at 74-74.
Lyons opened the scoring with a three-pointer, which was matched by Cheyney's Ed Braswell, before ESU opened a five-point lead with a 7-2 run over the next three minutes. Braswell made another triple to cut the deficit to 85-83 with 36 seconds to play, but Fleury made two free throws to push the lead to four and the Warriors forced a turnover in the final five seconds after Simpson scored with seven seconds left.
Bach had 23 points and eight rebounds to lead ESU, which played the final 10 minutes without senior forward Channon Easley, who fouled out with 30 seconds left in regulation.
Lyons scored 18 points and Pinckney had a career-high 16 points, both off the bench. Senior forward Josh Wentz had 15 points and was 6-of-7 from the field.
Simpson posted 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead Cheyney. Curry had 13 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and four blocks, and Braswell (18 points) and Tyrone Smith (14 points, 10 assists) were also in double figures.
ESU will return to action on Saturday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse for a 3 p.m. tip vs. the University of the Sciences.
