MILLERSVILLE - Jeremy Deighton's header 5:06 into overtime gave Slippery Rock a 1-0 win over East Stroudsburg University in the first round of the NCAA Division II men's soccer playoffs and gave the Warriors their second straight overtime loss at Millersville's Biemesderfer Stadium.
ESU's season ends with a 15-7 record and a pair of overtime setbacks in PSAC and NCAA tournament play. The Warriors fell 3-2 in overtime at Millersville last Wednesday in the PSAC semifinals. Slippery Rock advances to play the winner of Friday night's game between Millersville and California on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Deighton had several outstanding chances for Slippery Rock in the second half, knocking a header off the post and another just wide, and hit two shots that forced ESU goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa to make outstanding saves.
Pokrywa had six saves in the game and ESU held a 17-15 advantage in shots. Greg Blum made seven saves in goal for Slippery Rock.
The Warriors were making their 19th appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs and the 16th under head coach Jerry Sheska, who has also led ESU to 15 PSAC championships in his 27 seasons.
ESU returns five players who have been named All-PSAC in their careers - Pokrywa, back Danny Drago and midfielders Toric Robinson, Shane McFarlane and Jason Rudder - for the 2009 season.
