NYACK, N.Y. - Sophomore guard
Mike DeMarco scored a career-high 20 points to lead East Stroudsburg University to a 73-64 road win over Nyack on Tuesday at the Bowman Center.
DeMarco was 6-of-12 from the field and 8-of-8 from the foul line for the Warriors, who improve to 3-1 going into this weekend's tournament at Koehler Fieldhouse. Senior forward Chris Bach had 18 points and nine rebounds and senior guard Dawud Lyons was perfect on six field goal attempts to add 12 points off the bench.
Stedford McLean had 26 points and 10 boards for Nyack (2-5), but the rest of the starting lineup shot just 5-for-19 and scored 16 points. ESU limited Valiant Jones, Nyack's second-leading scorer at 13 points per game, to three points and an 0-for-6 showing from the field.
Bach scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half, and ESU opened the second half with a quick 7-0 run, including a three-point play by junior guard Andy Heimbach, to gain some breathing room from a 36-35 halftime lead. ESU stretched it out to double figures at the midpoint of the second half, but a personal 6-0 run by McLean cut the Nyack deficit to 63-59 at the four minute mark.
DeMarco grabbed an offensive rebound on the next possession that led to a three-pointer by senior forward Aaron Pinckney, and scored ESU's last seven points on a three-point play and four more free throws in the final minute.
Point guards Pat Fleury, Robby Pines and Antwain Wynn combined for 12 of ESU's 19 assists. ESU shot 48 percent and nearly 50 percent in both halves, and outscored Nyack 37-29 in the second half to pull away. Nyack shot 41 percent for the game and 31 percent after halftime.
