Andy Heimbach led a balanced scoring effort and East Stroudsburg University blew the game open with a 15-0 run midway through the first half as the Warriors beat Queens (N.Y.) 72-42 in the 44th Annual ESU Basketball Tournament presented by the Lehigh Valley International Airport and North Pole Express on Friday at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Bach had 13 points of 5-of-8 shooting, Heimbach was 4-for-7, scored 12 and had seven rebounds, and senior forward Aaron Pinckney was 5-for-7 for 10 points for ESU (4-1)
Senior Pat Fleury and junior Robby Pines both had seven assists, with Pines notching a career-high. Sophomore forward Mike Tobin had six points and a career-high six rebounds and forward Eric Bryan also had the best rebounding game of his freshman season with six boards.
The Warriors broke away from an 11-11 tie by outscoring Queens (1-4) 30-7 in the final 14:30 of the opening half. The 15-0 run featured five of the Knights' 15 first-half turnovers and ESU got points from six different players.
Bach had 12 points as ESU finished the first half with a 41-18 advantage. The Warriors shot 54 percent from the field while holding Queens to a 29 percent performance.
Mike Liander had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Queens, which fell 89-55 to ESU in last season's ESU tournament championship game. Liander and teammate Khaleef Allicott were both members of the All-Tournament team a year ago.
Shippensburg beat Chestnut Hill 66-62 in the first men's game of the day as Stephon Draper scored 19 points and Derrick Graff had 17 points and 11 boards. Freshman Kevin Whaley scored a career-high 24 points for Chestnut Hill.
This year's tournament is being played with a "classic" format, with ESU playing Chestnut Hill at 8 p.m. and Queens facing Shippensburg at 3 p.m.
