PEMBROKE, N.C. - East Stroudsburg University finished its season-opening series at UNC Pembroke with a 21-6 loss on Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

The Braves (11-2) exploded for 16 runs over the sixth and seventh innings to break open a 5-1 game and complete the series sweep.

Jason Coker, Joe Mangum and Jon-Jon Mirra all homered for UNC Pembroke in a seven-run sixth, and the Braves added nine more runs in the seventh.

ESU scored four runs in the eighth, with John Pisker and Brendan O'Malley both contributing RBI doubles.

UNC Pembroke took a 1-0 lead in the second before Mike Bortz tied the game with a solo home run, the first of his career at ESU, in the third.

The Braves reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third on a single by Keith Whitman, and got two more in the fifth sparked by Mirra's leadoff triple.

Kyle Sheaffer drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Anthony Clemens to account for the Warriors' run in the seventh.

Justin Yow, who threw a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Coker in his last start, gave up two hits in six innings to improve to 3-0 on the year for the Braves.

Bortz and Sheaffer were both 4-for-10 at the plate in the season-opening series and Chris Zsenak had a team-high four RBI. Ten different pitchers saw time on the mound with Dave Boyer, Jason Colletti and Bill Hezel making their first starts of the year.

The Warriors will be on the road next weekend with four games at The Apprentice School in Hampton, Va., including non-conference games against PSAC members Lock Haven and Kutztown.
