CHEYNEY - Robbie Simpson blocked a shot by Dawud Lyons in the final five seconds and Lyons' second-chance shot was no good as Cheyney pulled out a 71-69 win over East Stroudsburg University in the quarterfinals of the PSAC men's basketball tournament on Tuesday night at Cope Hall.

Ed Braswell tied the game at 69-69 with a layup with 1:36 left, and Dawud Morris had a layup after a miss by Braswell to give the Wolves a two-point lead with 30 seconds to go.

The Warriors called timeout with 10 seconds left to set up their final shot, and Lyons went to the basket but was denied by Simpson. Lyons regained the ball in the corner and drove to the rim, but his tying attempt wouldn't go and the Wolves survived to advance to the semifinals.

Cheyney led a tightly contested game by five points (58-53) with 6:38 left before ESU went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes. Lyons and Pat Fleury had back-to-back three-point plays to turn a three-point deficit into a three-point lead, and Channon Easley made a layup to complete the spurt.

Braswell led the Wolves back with a three-pointer and a jumper, and eventually tied the game with his layup in the final two minutes.

The loss ends ESU's season at 18-10, equaling last year's final record as the most wins for the program since going 21-7 during the 1991-92 season. The Warriors were making their third straight playoff appearance.

ESU led for most of the first half after opening up an early 13-7 advantage, but trailed 35-34 at the half after Tyrone Smith (21 points) hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Josh Wentz, who closed his career with a team-high 14 points, hit consecutive three's to break a 41-41 tie three minutes into the second half and match the biggest lead for either team in the game. Cheyney ran off 11 straight points to go ahead by five before Wentz made another three to stop the run and set up the final 10 minutes.

Lyons (13 points), Fleury (12), Andy Heimbach (10) and Aaron Pinckney (10) combined to give the Warriors five players in double figures.
