EAST STROUDSBURG - Sophomore Christian Saveri fired a shutout in the first conference start of his career to give East Stroudsburg University an 8-0 win over Bloomsburg in the second game of a PSAC East baseball doubleheader on Friday at Mitterling Field.
The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but their comeback fell short in a 9-7 loss in the first game of the afternoon.
Saveri allowed five hits and struck out three batters in the third start of his career at ESU. He was backed by an offense that scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the sixth to put the game away.
Junior SS Chad Schlegel and junior OF Mike Bortz both had base hits to get things started in the bottom of the first inning, and the Warriors benefited from an error to plate four runs (three unearned).
Senior OF Kyle Sheaffer had an RBI on a fielders choice, junior OF Kevin Thompson drew a bases loaded walk, and junior DH Blake Knecht lifted a sacrifice fly to put the first three runs on the board. Sophomore C Brendan O'Connor completed the inning with a single to score Sheaffer.
Saveri gave up just three hits through the first five innings, and the offense struck again in the bottom of the sixth sparked by a leadoff double by sophomore 3B Anthony Clemens, a base hit by sophomore 2B Brendan O'Malley and a two-run single by Bortz.
In the opener, sophomore Steve Prazenka retired the side in order in the first for ESU but was forced to leave with an injury. The Huskies got to junior Bill Hezel for three runs (two unearned) in the third and four more runs in the fourth to go ahead 7-0.
ESU got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single by Sheaffer to score Bortz. Bloomsburg scored twice more in the sixth to go ahead 9-1 before Sheaffer hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Bortz, who led off the inning with a double.
Knecht hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer to pull ESU within 9-4 in the seventh after O'Connor walked to start the frame. After the first out of the inning, Schlegel, Bortz and Zsenak put together consecutive singles and Sheaffer ripped a double that made the score 9-6 and brought the tying run to the plate.
Thompson grounded out to first to bring Zsenak home and cut the deficit to 9-7 after Mike Rosetti relieved starter Chace Phillips on the mound for the Huskies, but sophomore DH John Pisker grounded out to second to end the game.
ESU had 11 hits in the first game and eight more in the second. Zsenak was 3-for-4 in the opener, Bortz went 2-for-3 and scored three runs and Sheaffer was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Bortz stayed hot in the nightcap, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, and O'Malley also had a two-hit game for ESU.
The Warriors and Huskies will wrap up the series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Bloomsburg.
