BLOOMSBURG - Sophomore Brendan O'Malley had three hits, including a two-run home run, and drove in six runs as East Stroudsburg University won 15-4 in the first game of a PSAC East baseball doubleheader at Bloomsburg on Saturday.
The Huskies scored four runs in the sixth inning, keyed by the second home run of the game by Chris Tressler, to win the second game 10-6.
Senior Dave Boyer set ESU's school record with his 36th career start in the opener and got support from an offense that scored 13 of its 15 runs over the final three innings.
The Warriors used three Bloomsburg errors to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning but trailed 4-2 going into the top of the fifth. O'Malley's two-run single tied the game at 4-4, and junior CF Mike Bortz drilled his seventh homer of the season to give the Warriors a 6-4 advantage. Sophomore C Brendan O'Connor drew a bases loaded walk to score the fifth run of the inning for a 7-4 lead.
O'Malley went deep in the sixth inning for the second home run of his career, and had a two RBI single to spark a six-run outburst in the final inning as the Warriors won going away.
Senior LF Kyle Sheaffer was 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, including one to drive in a run in the seventh. Sophomore John Pisker had a two-run single and sophomore Kenny Serfass also collected a base hit to bring home a run in the frame.
Boyer went six innings on the mound and moved into a tie for fourth with his 16th career victory at ESU, including a 5-3 mark this season.
Tressler homered in consecutive at bats for the Huskies in the nightcap. The first broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, and the second padded the lead following a two-run double by Preston Hitchcock in the sixth inning.
ESU scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Bortz, and junior RF Kevin Thompson hit a solo homer to lead off the second and pull the Warriors within 3-2 after Bloomsburg scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first.
Junior Chad Schlegel gave ESU a 5-4 lead with a bases-clearing double in the top of the fourth. Bloomsburg tied the game at 5-5 on a RBI single by Keenan McCann in the bottom of the inning.
The Warriors had three hits in their final at bat, including an RBI single from Sheaffer, but the Warriors were unable to recreate Friday's five-run seventh inning in a 9-7 loss in the first game of the series.
Sophomore Jeremy Gigliotti was hit with the loss for ESU after giving up four earned runs (eight total) in five innings of work. Mike Griggs picked up his second win of the season and Paul Culbertson had the save for Bloomsburg.
The Warriors are off until next Friday when they host Kutztown in a crucial PSAC East doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Mitterling Field.
