EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior Dave Boyer won his 17th career game with a 7-3 victory in game one, and sophomore Jeremy Gigliotti had 10 strikeouts and sophomore Anthony Clemens set the school record with his eighth career save in a 5-3 victory in the nightcap as East Stroudsburg University swept Millersville to close the 2008 baseball season on Saturday.
Boyer threw the 16th complete game of his career and gave up all three runs in the sixth inning. The Warriors scored seven runs, all with two outs, in the third inning to open a big lead and Boyer did the rest of the work on the mound.
The senior right-hander finishes his career with the school record for games started (38), and ranks third in innings pitched (232.0) and wins (17). He posted a 6-4 record with one save and a 4.37 earned run average in 12 games as a senior.
ESU benefited from an error to start the third inning and then put six consecutive batters on base with two outs, including five hits, punctuated by a three-run homer from sophomore DH John Pisker.
Junior CF Mike Bortz singled to put runners on the corners and junior 1B Chris Zsenak drove an RBI double to put the first run on the board. Junior RF Kevin Thompson was hit by a pitch, his second of the game, and Clemens (2 RBI) and sophomore 2B Brendan O'Malley followed with run-scoring doubles to extend the lead before Pisker drove a pitch over the left field fence to give ESU a 7-0 advantage.
Gigliotti had the second 10-strikeout game of his career and junior DH Mike Dunkailo was 3-for-3, including a two-run home run in the second inning, as the Warriors completed the sweep.
ESU broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Thompson singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Clemens to start the frame and Dunkailo had a single to put runners at first and third.
Sophomore C Brendan O'Connor beat a throw to first on a potential double play and Thompson scored the go-ahead run, and freshman SS Edwin Padua singled and O'Malley walked to load the bases. O'Connor came home on a wild pitch to make the score 5-3 before senior LF Kyle Sheaffer lined out to first to end the inning.
Clemens blanked the Marauders in the seventh inning for his eighth career save to break the school record held by Rich Wescoe (1974-75).
Sheaffer closes his career ranked in the top 10 in school history in nine offensive categories. He is fourth in hits (193), RBI (99), extra-base hits (50), total bases (271) and stolen bases (43) and is also among the top 10 in doubles, home runs, runs and times hit by pitch.
Bortz moves into sixth in the single season record book with a .622 slugging percentage in his first season at ESU and pounded 20 extra-base hits in 34 games. His seven home runs are tied for third in a single season, and he had team-highs with 31 RBI and 32 runs.
Zsenak is tied for fourth with 14 doubles and finishes just outside the top 10 with a .374 batting average and .468 on-base percentage after leading the Warriors in both categories.
ESU finishes the season with a 21-27 record, its third straight 20-win season, and returns every player except Boyer and Sheaffer in 2009. Senior pitcher Jason Colletti is expected to apply for a medical redshirt and rejoin the Warriors as a graduate student next spring.
