Box Score
EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior guard
Dawud Lyons tied his career-highs with 19 points and seven rebounds and East Stroudsburg University improved to 16-2 against the PSAC West since the start of the 2006-07 season with a 68-63 comeback win over Edinboro on Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors (9-4) trailed nearly the entire first half and found themselves in a 15-point hole with just over three minutes to go, but managed to cut the deficit to nine points (36-27) at halftime.
Lyons scored seven points during ESU's comeback, a decisive 12-0 run, and started the spurt with a jumper with 18:43 left. Senior forward Chris Bach (10 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks) had a blocked shot, rebound and two free throws following Edinboro's next possession. Senior forward Aaron Pinckney had a steal that led to a three-pointer by senior guard Pat Fleury that quickly cut the margin to 39-36.
Bach had another block and Lyons scored the next time down, and Lyons finished the run and gave ESU a 41-39 lead with a three-pointer at the 15:31 mark. The game was tied four times from that point and Edinboro took a brief 47-45 advantage on a tip-in by Vlad Kovalevsky (13 points, 16 rebounds) before junior guard Andy Heimbach forced a 47-47 tie with 11:08 left with a jumper on ESU's next trip.
A layup by Kovalevsky was Edinboro's only bucket during a 12-2 run for the Warriors over the next eight minutes. Bach scored to put ESU ahead for good, sophomore forward Mike Tobin scored five points with a jumper and a triple, freshman forward Eric Bryan got into the book with a layup, and Lyons once again completed the stretch with a three-pointer to give ESU a double-figure lead (59-49) for the first time of the afternoon.
Edinboro managed to cut into a 63-53 deficit with 1:13 left, pulling within five points with 33 seconds to go, but the Warriors did enough from the foul line to hold off the rally.
ESU had three players in double figures - Lyons, Bach and Fleury (11 points) - and held a 48-37 advantage on the glass. Neither team shot particularly well but the Warriors grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, including five by Pinckney, and ESU came up with 14 steals in the contest.
Joe Jones, the PSAC's scoring leader, had 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting for Edinboro. Gil Cummings (4-of-14) scored 13. Kovalevsky battled Bach on the interior, with both finishing with double-doubles.
ESU hosts PSAC East favorite Kutztown in Wednesday's conference opener at 8 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors, who were picked to finish third, went 3-1 against the PSAC West over the last two weekends, including a 52-49 win at then-No. 4-ranked Gannon last Sunday.
