ERIE - Senior forward
Aaron Pinckney hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give East Stroudsburg University a 52-49 upset of No. 4-ranked Gannon on Sunday afternoon in Erie.
The Warriors (7-4) handed the Golden Knights (9-1) their first loss of the season in their first year as a member of the PSAC and broke a three-game losing streak that came against a trio of strong opponents - Florida Southern, St. Joseph's (Ind.) and Clarion - over the last six days.
Gannon beat preseason PSAC East favorite Kutztown 88-58 on Saturday, but was unable to separate from a 26-23 halftime lead over the Warriors as Pinckney hit a three 20 seconds into the second half.
Neither team led by more than six points in the contest, and ESU never trailed after freshman forward Eric Bryan put the Warriors ahead 36-35 with an offensive rebound and putback with just over 13 minutes left. There were three ties from that point, the last a 49-49 deadlock with 56 seconds left following a layup by Gannon's Alfonso Scandrett.
George Johnson had a steal to get the ball back for Gannon with a half-minute remaining, but Tyler Stoczynski missed a jumper with 10 seconds left and ESU senior forward Chris Bach secured the defensive rebound. After a timeout, senior guard Pat Fleury found Pinckney, who gave the Warriors the victory.
Bach had 18 points and seven rebounds for ESU, which received contributions from nine players who were on the floor for at least 10 minutes. Pinckney finished with nine points and hit the Warriors' only two three-pointers of the game, and Fleury had six assists.
The Warriors held Gannon to a 35.2 shooting percentage and 3-of-13 mark from the three-point line. Point guard Joe Lindsey had a team-high 13 points but just two assists and four turnovers, while Dave Wilson had nine points and nine boards.
ESU hosts Lock Haven and Edinboro next weekend in the final two PSAC crossover games of the season before opening PSAC East play on Wednesday, Jan. 14 against Kutztown.
