EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore midfielders
Jeremy Cheeseman and
Greg Schook scored goals six minutes apart early in the second half and senior goalkeeper
Larry Pokrywa posted his 27th career shutout as East Stroudsburg University blanked NYIT, 2-0, for its fourth straight win on Wednesday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Pokrywa made four saves for his second straight shutout, fifth of the season and 27th of his career, tying Bill Sterner (2002-05) for second all-time at ESU. Jason Petronis set the career record of 31 from 1992-95.
ESU generated its goals in the 59th and 65th minutes, with Cheeseman scoring the game's first goal on an assist from the right wing from senior midfielder
Jason Rudder, and Schook cleaning up a play started by senior forward
Tom Ehrlich in the penalty box. Schook has three goals and Cheeseman scored his second goal of the year.
The Warriors' fourth straight win gives them a 7-6-1 record, with five of the six losses coming by one goal, including four to teams regionally ranked by the NCAA. ESU evened its record vs. NYIT over the last three years to 2-2. NYIT won the last match-up at Eiler-Martin Stadium, 2-0, in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Division II Northeast Regional.
ESU will play one more non-conference game, at Davis & Elkins on Saturday, before finishing the regular season with PSAC East match-ups against Shippensburg (Oct. 20, home), Bloomsburg (Oct. 28, away) and West Chester (Oct. 31, home). The Warriors have missed the PSAC playoffs just five times in 27 seasons under head coach
Jerry Sheska and have won 15 conference titles.
