EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior guard
Andy Heimbach scored 20 points and was 4-for-6 from behind the arc to set the school record for career three-pointers as East Stroudsburg University won its 2009-10 men's basketball season opener, 97-48, over Penn State-Schuylkill on Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Heimbach entered the game with 160 three-pointers in his career, two behind the record of 162 held by Juwan Justice (1998-02). He scored 15 points in the first half and hit his third triple of the game as the half expired to establish the Warriors' new mark.
Freshmen forwards
Marcus Brown and
Duane Johnson both scored 14 points and were sharp from the floor in their collegiate debuts, with Brown shooting 6-for-9 and Johnson going 6-for-7. ESU put a dozen players in the scoring column, shot 48 percent (36-for-75) and corralled 18 offensive rebounds. Brown had a team-high seven rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
The Warriors also forced 51 turnovers and had 28 steals and nine blocked shots. Senior point guard
Robby Pines had nine points, five assists and seven steals and junior forward
Mike Tobin recorded seven points, five rebounds and six steals. Both steals marks for Pines and Tobin are career-highs, and junior guard
Mike DeMarco had a career-best five assists.
Six players had at least one block, led by two each from Brown, senior forward
Preston Ritter and freshman forward
Terrance King, who also had five points, five rebounds and two steals.
Cory Houser scored 16 points for Penn State-Schuylkill, which falls to 1-2.
The Warriors return to the floor this weekend with a tournament at Shippensburg, taking on Mercy College on Friday at 5 p.m. and Penn State-Allegheny on Saturday at the same time.
