ESU jumped on the Firebirds early with a 10-0 run, sparked by six points from Tobin, in the first three minutes. UDC came back behind seven quick points from Munson, pulled within 17-16 on a three-pointer by Keith Brooks and took two brief one-point leads later in the half.
Covert hit a three-pointer with a minute left in the half to establish a 33-28 advantage at intermission, and the second half was just as close – ESU's seven-point lead after two free throws by senior guard
Andy Heimbach to start the period was its largest of the half.
The score was within one possession for the final eight minutes, but ESU responded to every challenge. Tobin hit a pair of free throws with 4:00 left after UDC took its first lead of the second half, and the Warriors didn't allow a point in the final 3:19 to lock down the victory.
