EASTON – Senior sprinter Andrew McCloskey set the school record in the 60-yard dash and senior hurdler Rusty Smith reached the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard in the 60-yard hurdles for East Stroudsburg University to begin the 2009-10 indoor track and field campaign at the Leopard Invitational on Friday night at Kirby Sports Center.

McCloskey ran a time of 6.41 seconds in the prelims the 60, just edging the school record of 6.42 set by Matt Henderson in 2004. He clocked in at 6.42 to win the finals. McCloskey was also second in the 300-yard dash in 32.59 and is coming off a record-setting junior season as he won PSAC outdoor titles in the 100m and 200m and anchored the winning 4x100m relay, all three in school-record times. He also competed in the 100 and 4x100 at the NCAA Championships.

Smith, who won his first PSAC title and earned his second NCAA indoor All-America honor last winter, began his season with a time of 7.72 seconds to hit the NCAA qualifying standard on the nose.

ESU won 11 events, led by senior Drew Miller's double victory in the triple jump and long jump. Miller, the defending PSAC champion in the triple jump, won that event with a mark of 46-4 1/4 and captured the long jump at 20-10 3/4.

Other winners for the Warriors included junior Lynn Mayer in the high jump (5-4), freshman Lauren Ventrella in the 60-yard hurdles (8.48), freshman Lauren Hannan in the long jump (15-6 1/4) and junior Jacquelyn Berthelsen in the shot put (36-7 3/4).

Junior Greg Pammer won the 440-yard dash in 51.84, freshman Kyle Soden took the high jump (6-5) and senior Colin Feeney captured the pole vault (14-3).

Junior Jasmine Johnson, an NCAA participant and the school record-holder in the 400m during the outdoor season, was second in the 440-yard dash in 1:02.61. Ventrella placed second in the 220-yard dash (26.78).

In the women's high jump, Mayer, seniors Janelle Smith and Trina Carito and sophomore Devyn Emerich all cleared 5-4, with Mayer winning on the number of jumps. Mayer was also second in the triple jump (33-11 1/2). Senior Emily Carothers took second in both the shot put and weight throw.

Freshman Ian Melhorn nearly edged McCloskey for second in the 300-yard dash with a time of 32.61, two-hundredths of a second off his teammate's pace. Sophomore Steve Greer was second in the 440 and Soden placed third in the finals of the 60-yard hurdles. Sophomore Dan Johnson was second behind Soden in the high jump.

The Warriors are away from action until mid-January when they travel to Kutztown for an invitational on Friday, January 15.
