BLOOMSBURG - Sophomore guard
Mike DeMarco made two three-pointers in a 15-0 run early in the second half as East Stroudsburg University broke open a close game to beat Bloomsburg 82-71 in PSAC East men's basketball on Wednesday night at Nelson Field House.
DeMarco (12 points, 3-6) and junior guard Andy Heimbach (16 points, 4-5) helped the Warriors shoot 9-of-18 from behind the three-point line, including a 5-for-8 mark in the second half. Senior forward Chris Bach had 15 points and tied his career-high with 16 rebounds and sophomore forward Mike Tobin added 10 points to give the Warriors four players in double figures.
Bloomsburg trailed 36-33 at halftime and Larry Webster cut the deficit to one on the first possession of the second half before the Warriors rattled off the next 15 points to go ahead 51-35 less than four minutes into the period. DeMarco and senior guard Dawud Lyons both scored six points in the stretch, and Bach made 1-of-2 at the line, had two offensive rebounds and finally scored to finish the run.
Heimbach made a pair of three's and 2-of-3 free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt to stretch the lead to 24 points (63-39) with just under 12 minutes left. The Warriors were still up by 24 with five minutes left before the Huskies scored late to make it an 11-point margin of victory.
ESU broke a five-game losing streak and improved to 4-5 in PSAC East play heading into Saturday's conference match-up with Shippensburg at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors began the night two games out of the last playoff spot and have qualified for the postseason in each of the last three years.
