HAMPTON, Va. - Sophomore Tom Admire allowed one run over seven innings for his first career win to help East Stroudsburg University split a pair of games at the Apprentice Builder Invitational on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium.
Admire allowed five hits and struck out five and senior 1B Mark Angelo was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Warriors to a 10-1 win over tournament host Apprentice in their afternoon game.
Kutztown outlasted ESU (5-2) for a 15-8 win in the morning contest, as the Warriors battled back from deficits of 6-0 and 10-4 with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Kutztown put five runs on the board in the ninth to secure the win.
Admire allowed just one runner past first base in his first six innings before giving up his only run in the seventh with ESU holding an 8-0 lead. The Warriors sent five runs across, all unearned, in the fourth inning as Apprentice made three errors and Angelo and senior DH Chris Zsenak both had RBI singles. Sophomore SS Edwin Padua also walked to bring in a run, and freshman OF Carey Zimmerman plated another run with a fielder's choice.
Sophomore C Bryce Muth had a two-run double in the fifth that scored senior OF Kevin Thompson and freshman 1B Brandon Snyder, and Angelo's double brought home freshman 2B Ryan Guarino in the sixth.
ESU closed its scoring with two runs in the eighth. Guarino's single scored senior OF Mike Bortz, and Angelo plated Guarino with his second double of the game. Guarino was 2-for-5 and scored three runs and Thompson and Snyder also scored twice in the win.
In the opener, Kutztown pounded out 14 hits, led by a 4-for-5 day by Mike Kacelowicz, but didn't seal the victory until a five-run ninth that was highlighted by a two RBI double by Kacelowicz.
The Golden Bears got to junior left-hander Christian Saveri early, with three runs in the first and three more (all unearned) in the fourth, keyed by a two-run double by Chad Lightcap, before the Warriors scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-3.
Thompson started the inning with a single and junior OF John Pisker cracked a double that brought him around for the first run. Junior 3B Anthony Clemens followed with a single that scored Pisker, and Clemens scored after Angelo drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs before a strikeout ended the inning.
Kutztown led 7-4 after six innings, as Jared Frey singled to score Kacelowicz and Thompson doubled and scored on a wild pitch for the Warriors. The Golden Bears got a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the seventh and scored another run with two outs in the eighth to go ahead 10-4 before ESU came back with a big frame in the bottom of the inning.
The Warriors scored all four runs without a hit, as Zsenak and Thompson walked, Pisker was hit by a pitch, and Clemens walked to force in a run. Everybody moved up and Thompson scored on a wild pitch, and Snyder grounded out to second to score a run. Guarino lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Clemens, and the Warriors trailed just 10-8 going into the top of the ninth when Kutztown put the game away.
Saveri allowed six runs (three earned) and struck out five in 3.1 innings in his second start of the season. Freshman Andy Noga followed with 4.2 innings in relief and struck out five of the first six batters he faced.
