MILLERSVILLE - Senior forward
Chris Bach scored 18 points, including the 1,000th of his career, on the same day he became the first basketball Academic All-American in school history and led East Stroudsburg University to a 68-63 win at Millersville on Wednesday night at Pucillo Gymnasium.
Bach became the 22nd 1,000-point scorer in ESU history with a layup with 4:00 left that cut Millersville's lead to 60-59 in a second half that saw the lead change five times in the final 10 minutes.
Senior guard Pat Fleury scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half and hit a three-pointer with 2:43 left that gave the Warriors the lead for good, and Bach scored on an assist from Fleury on ESU's next possession.
Fleury hit a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to go to put the Warriors up 66-60 and complete a 9-0 run. Millersville missed five straight shots down the stretch, including four three-pointers, and was 4-of-26 from long distance for the game.
Bach finished the game with 1,002 points in his college career that spans more than a decade. He scored 72 points as a freshman at Philadelphia University during the 1996-97 season, and has 930 points in his three seasons at ESU.
He also earned third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors on Wednesday and is the 20th ESU student-athlete to be honored for academic achievement at the national level.
ESU received contributions from nearly everybody on the roster, as 10 players were on the floor for at least a dozen minutes. Sophomore forward Mike Tobin scored nine points, all in the first half, and added a career-high nine rebounds; senior forward Aaron Pinckney and junior guard Darnell Moore both scored six points; and the Warriors turned the ball over just 11 times, their third-lowest total of the year.
The win gives ESU (16-10, 7-6) a chance to clinch its fourth straight PSAC playoff appearance for the first time in school history with a win on Saturday at West Chester or a Mansfield loss at home to Millersville. Tip-off for the game between the Warriors and Golden Rams is slated for 3 p.m. at Hollinger Fieldhouse.
