KUTZTOWN - Darin Gorski and Adam Maini limited East Stroudsburg University to two runs as No. 11 Kutztown beat the Warriors, 6-1 and 4-1, in the first PSAC East baseball doubleheader for both schools on Friday at North Campus Field.
Gorski gave up three hits and struck out seven over 6.0 innings in the opener, while the Warriors managed seven hits off Maini in 5.2 innings but didn't score until the sixth. Mike Bucklin pitched a perfect seventh for his third save of the year.
Kutztown (14-5, 2-0) is the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region, while the Warriors (12-8, 0-2) are No. 8 in this week's poll. The two teams will meet again on Saturday at ESU's Mitterling Field.
Shane Houck and Jeff Kistle were both 2-for-3 and James Quigley and Michael Dugan drove in two runs each in game one, as Kutztown put two runs on the board in the second, third and fourth innings.
Junior Steve Prazenka gave up all six runs (five earned) in 3.0 innings and falls to 2-1 on the season. Senior Jason Colletti shut down the Golden Bears over the final three frames and allowed two hits.
In the second game, Maini and ESU sophomore Tom Admire both threw three scoreless innings before Matt Kulbacki gave Kutztown a 1-0 lead with a home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Bears added another run, then got a two-run single from Quigley to plate a pair of unearned runs and take a 4-0 lead.
ESU scored its run in the sixth, when senior OF Kevin Thompson and junior DH John Pisker had two-out singles and Thompson scored after two wild pitches. Thompson and Pisker both went 2-for-3 in the game, and Kulbacki had a two-hit game for Kutztown.
Admire gave up four runs (two earned) in 4.0 innings and struck out five. Junior Christian Saveri had three strikeouts and gave up one hit in 2.0 innings in relief.
