EAST STROUDSBURG - Kutztown used timely hitting in the late innings of both games to defeat East Stroudsburg University, 4-3 and 3-2, in PSAC East baseball doubleheader action on Saturday at Mitterling Field.
In the opener, the Warriors (12-10, 0-4) took an early 1-0 lead with senior OF Kevin Thompson's RBI single in the second inning. Thompson brought in another run in the third inning, this time on a two-out double, which gave ESU a 3-1 lead.
Kutztown (16-5, 4-0) came back in the top of the fifth with three runs on four hits, all singles, to take a 4-3 lead. Pitchers Jason Herr and Mike Bucklin combined to shutout the Warriors in the final three innings.
Thompson finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Seniors Mark Angelo and Chris Zsenak combined to go 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored.
Junior pitcher Jeremy Gigliotti started and went four innings, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out five. The loss dropped him to 2-2 on the season. Junior Christian Saveri shut out the Golden Bears over the final three innings, striking out five.
In the second game, freshman Andy Noga, senior Jason Colletti and Saveri combined to give up six hits and one run over 6.1 innings before Shayne Houck doubled and Mike Kacelowicz singled him home. The RBI by Kacelowicz tied the game at 2-2. An error would later bring Kacelowicz home, putting the Golden Bears ahead for good.
Angelo collected two more hits in four at-bats and sophomore catcher Bryce Muth went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and one run scored for the Warriors, who travel to Columbia Union for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m.
