Cumulative Stats for Florida Trip
FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Freshman Andy Noga gave up two hits over six innings in a 3-0 win in the first game as East Stroudsburg University closed its spring break trip to Florida by splitting a doubleheader with Chestnut Hill on Friday.
The Griffins won the second game 12-4 as ESU ended the trip with a 7-3 record. The Warriors are 12-6 on the season.
Noga allowed just two base runners to reach scoring position in his third career start and had four strikeouts before junior Anthony Clemens came on to pitch the seventh inning to record his 10th career save.
ESU scored single runs in the first, second and sixth innings to support Noga. Senior 3B Mark Angelo singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by senior 1B Chris Zsenak in the first inning. In the second, the Warriors executed a double steal of home with junior C Brendan O'Connor crossing the plate to go ahead 2-0.
The Warriors had nine hits in the game but didn't dent the scoreboard again until the sixth, when Clemens doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman SS Evan Gallagher. Clemens retired the first two batters he faced in the seventh before walking the next two hitters, but got a ground ball to senior Chad Schlegel at second to end the game.
In the second game, ESU took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning before Chestnut Hill came back. The Griffins scored once in the third and seven times in the fourth, then added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Angelo, Zsenak and senior Kevin Thompson each had two hits in the game and accounted for all four runs batted in. Angelo singled and doubled, Zsenak had two doubles, Thompson collected a double and a triple and senior OF Mike Bortz was 1-for-3 and scored twice.
Thompson was hit by a pitch in both games, running his consecutive games streak to seven and tying the school record of 27 in his career which he shares with Scott Roth (1997-2000). He also passed Jacob DeBoer for second in career doubles with 36 during his four years at ESU.
ESU is scheduled to play the Griffins again on Tuesday in a single nine-inning game at Chestnut Hill.
