Box Score

EAST STROUDSBURG - Seniors Mark Angelo, Chris Zsenak and Kevin Thompson all went 2-for-3 in the middle of the order and senior Bill Hezel allowed one hit in six innings of work as East Stroudsburg University defeated Philadelphia University, 9-4, in non-conference baseball on Thursday at Mitterling Field.

The Warriors (21-14), ranked No. 7 in this week's NCBWA Atlantic Regional poll, won their sixth straight game going into this weekend's PSAC East series against Shippensburg.

ESU scored two runs in the second inning, as Thompson had an RBI single to plate Zsenak and later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman 2B Ryan Guarino, and scored seven more runs in the third inning to put the game away early.

Freshman SS Evan Gallagher led off the third with a single and had an RBI base hit later in the frame as the Warriors sent 11 hitters to the plate. The first six batters all had hits, including doubles by senior OF Mike Bortz, Angelo and Zsenak, and freshman OF Carey Zimmerman and Thompson both singled. Junior C Brendan O'Connor also added an RBI single in the inning.

Hezel retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up an unearned run in the third inning. He threw four 1-2-3 innings and got out of a one-out, bases loaded situation in the sixth, his final inning of work. The senior struck out six and walked two and improves to 3-1 on the season.

Freshman Paul Glenn worked the final three innings, struck out three and didn't issue a walk in recording his first career save. Philadelphia U scored three runs (two earned) in the eighth to set the final margin at 9-4.

The Warriors had 15 hits, the sixth time this season that they have reached that mark. Gallagher was 2-for-2 to complement the middle of the order, Zsenak and Thompson both scored two runs and Angelo drove in two with his double in the third.

ESU and Shippensburg are scheduled to open this weekend's series on Friday at 1 p.m. at Mitterling Field. In the event of inclement weather, the doubleheader will be moved to Sunday at 1 p.m. and the first two games of the series will be played at Shippensburg on Saturday.
