EAST STROUDSBURG - Shippensburg won the first game 2-1 in 12 innings, then posted a 10-5 victory in the nightcap to take a PSAC East baseball doubleheader from East Stroudsburg University on Sunday afternoon at Mitterling Field.
Junior lefthander Jeremy Gigliotti threw nine innings in the opener, gave up three hits and didn't allow an earned run in his second straight outstanding performance for the Warriors. The reigning PSAC East Pitcher of the Week, Gigliotti hasn't given up an earned run in his last 16 innings on the mound and has 49 strikeouts in 43.0 innings this season.
Freshman Andy Noga threw the final three innings for ESU (22-17, 6-10) and allowed one base runner in his first two frames before Shippensburg (17-22, 7-5) put together three two-out hits, including a pair of infield singles, to plate the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th.
Kody Kibler got the start for Shippensburg and scattered six hits over six innings to turn the ball over to closer Tyler Redick, who came on in the seventh with a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the third.
Junior DH John Pisker walked to open the inning and was forced out on a fielders choice by junior C Brendan O'Connor, who was lifted for pinch runner Brendan O'Malley.
O'Malley moved up to second on a wild pitched and scored on a single by freshman 2B Ryan Guarino that tied the score at 1-1 and sent the game to extra innings.
Gigliotti shut down the Raiders in the eighth and ninth to complete his outing in which he faced the minimum number of batters (18) from the fourth inning on. ESU had the potential winning run on second three times, but Redick got out of trouble and third baseman Ben Miller singled to score right fielder Cody Kulp in the 12th.
Redick worked the final six innings on the mound for the Raiders after allowing ESU's run in the seventh. He entered the game with 6.2 innings pitched in nine appearances, which included five saves.
In the second game, Kulp went 5-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, drove in three runs and scored three times to lead a Shippensburg offense that had 16 hits. His two-run homer in the top of the third gave the Raiders the first lead of the game before ESU scored twice in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by senior 3B Mark Angelo and senior 1B Chris Zsenak.
Shippensburg went ahead 6-2 in the fifth when Kulp started a two-out rally with a double. He came around to score on an error, and all four Raiders runs in the inning were unearned after they collected five hits, took advantage of another ESU error and eventually left the bases loaded.
Kulp doubled and scored on a single by left fielder Kasey Kuhns in the sixth and second baseman Kyle Rhoades drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk to put the Raiders ahead 8-2.
ESU got three runs back in the bottom of the inning to make the margin 8-5. Angelo was hit by a pitch, Zsenak walked and senior OF Kevin Thompson doubled off relief pitcher Jason Kelly, who replaced starter Ryan Rehman. O'Malley, the designated hitter in the second game, singled to plate Zsenak and Thompson before Shippensburg got a double play to get out of the inning.
The Raiders added two more runs (one earned) in the seventh on an RBI single by Kulp and a sacrifice fly by Ben Miller to set the final score. ESU committed four errors in the game and allowed five earned runs.
Junior Christian Saveri made his third start and 15th appearance of the season on the mound and gave up two earned runs (six overall) in 4.2 innings and was hit with the loss. Senior Jason Colletti, junior Anthony Clemens and freshman Brandon Snyder pieced together the final seven outs.
Rehman picked up the win for Shippensburg and was charged with four runs over 5.0 innings while pitching to two batters in the sixth. Kelly got all three outs in the sixth and Jimmy Miller threw the seventh inning for the Raiders.
Angelo was 4-for-7 and was hit by two pitches to lead the Warriors at the plate in the doubleheader. Zsenak and Guarino both had two-hit games in the 12-inning marathon in the opener as ESU outhit Shippensburg 10-7. Four Raiders had multiple-hit games in the nightcap and Kulp went 7-for-10 on the afternoon.
