EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior first baseman Chris Zsenak hit two home runs and had seven RBI in the first game and senior outfielder Kevin Thompson homered and set the school record for career doubles in the second game as East Stroudsburg University routed Lock Haven, 16-1 and 15-2, in non-conference baseball on Wednesday.
Zsenak's homers give him eight on the season, tied for second in school history, and 14 for his career which ranks third. He also went over 100 career runs batted in with nine on the afternoon and was 5-for-7 at the plate.
Thompson had two doubles along with his seventh home run of the year in the second game and finished the day with 43 career doubles, passing J.D. Stern (1996-99) for the most in school history. He also set the single season record with 18 doubles and has 27 extra-base hits this season, two away from ESU's all-time mark.
Senior 3B Mark Angelo went 7-for-9 in the doubleheader (3-4 in game 1, 4-5 in game 2), had two doubles, four RBI and scored four runs. Senior OF Mike Bortz also had a big day, going 4-for-7 with four RBI and five runs scored.
The Warriors improve to 24-17 and have scored at least 10 runs in 15 games this season. They hit .523 (34-for-65) with seven doubles and three home runs against the Bald Eagles after entering the week ranked 14th out of 229 schools in Division II with 91 doubles. Thompson (18), Angelo (17), Bortz (14) and Zsenak (14) are all in the top 10 in doubles in a single season in school history.
Senior Bill Hezel and freshman Paul Glenn both turned in outstanding performances on the mound as ESU didn't allow an earned run in either game. Hezel (4-1) held the Bald Eagles to one hit in 5.0 innings in the first game and junior Kenny Serfass threw 2.0 innings in relief.
Glenn earned his first career win in game two and struck out six in 6.0 innings, while freshman Brandon Snyder maintained his 0.00 ERA in six appearances this season with a scoreless inning in the seventh.
ESU put away the first game early, leading 6-0 after two innings, 10-0 after three and 16-0 through four frames. Zsenak had three-run homers in both the second and third innings to break the game open.
In game two, Lock Haven scored first with a pair of unearned runs off Glenn in the second, but the Warriors tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by junior DH John Pisker and a sacrifice fly by Bortz. ESU went ahead 3-2 in the third when Thompson scored during a rundown, and put seven runs on the board in the fourth inning to bury the Bald Eagles.
A total of 12 ESU players had hits, 14 scored runs and 11 drove in runs in the doubleheader. Pisker and freshman 2B Ryan Guarino were both 3-for-5, including a double for Guarino's first career extra-base hit, and Snyder and junior OF Brendan O'Malley went 2-for-3.
