KUTZTOWN - Junior Matt Gallup became East Stroudsburg University's first automatic qualifier for the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a height of 16-7 in the pole vault and junior Kenny Cardullo improved on his provisional mark in the javelin to highlight the Warriors' performances at the Kutztown Invitational on Friday night.
Gallup has won three straight PSAC championships in the pole vault going into next weekend's conference meet at Millersville and is guaranteed a spot at the NCAA Championships on May 21-23 at San Angelo, Texas. He was also an automatic qualifier a year ago with a school-record height of 16-8 3/4 that he reached at the PSAC Championships.
Cardullo's throw of 203-3 in the javelin moved him up the performance list and closer to his third straight appearance at the NCAA Championships. His previous top mark this season was 195-5 1/4 at the ESU All-American Meet two weeks ago, while sophomore Bill Buis is also on the provisional list at 201-1.
Gallup and Cardullo were two of seven individual winners on the men's side, along with both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. Junior Andrew McCloskey (100m, 11.04), sophomore Asher Ashfield (200m, 23.26), junior Kyle Weir (5000m, 15:47.92), junior Rusty Smith (110m hurdles, 14.87) and junior Drew Miller (triple jump, 46-8) also won their events for the Warriors. McCloskey, Smith and Miller have already reached NCAA provisional standards.
In the 4x100m relay, the Warriors' quartet of Ashfield, juniors Chris Reddick and Jeff McClenton and McCloskey ran a time of 41.63 seconds. The same group finished in 41.34 two weeks ago at Eiler-Martin Stadium to clock a provisional qualifying time. McCloskey, Reddick, sophomore Greg Pammer and freshman Brandon Hillman won the 4x400m relay in 3:19.23.
Senior Katherine Doyle won the 100m dash in 12.66 seconds to lead four winners for the ESU women's team. Doyle also ran a split of 56.2 seconds in the 4x400m relay. ESU's school record in the open 400m dash is 56.24 seconds.
Sophomore Allyson Cardullo won the javelin for the sixth time this season with a distance of 123-7. Junior Trina Carito captured the high jump at 5-3 and sophomore Lynn Mayer, an NCAA qualifier in the high jump, won the triple jump with a mark of 32-2 3/4.
ESU's throwers also had a strong day, with junior Amanda Sines placing second in the discus, hammer and shot put and sophomore Danielle Laws finishing third in the discus and shot put.
In the men's throws, junior Paul Wagner, another NCAA qualifier in the hammer for the Warriors, was second in both the hammer (185-3) and the discus (151-3). Senior Tom Sutor was third in the hammer at 176-8.
