MILLERSVILLE - Junior Paul Wagner won his fourth career PSAC championship with a record throw in the hammer, junior Amanda Sines won the women's shot put and junior Andrew McCloskey set the school record in the 100m dash and anchored the record-setting 4x100m relay to pace East Stroudsburg University in Friday's action at the 2009 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Millersville's Biemesderfer Stadium.
Wagner threw the hammer 190-3, establishing a new championship meet mark and just missing his overall PSAC record of 190-7 which he set earlier this year. He was also third in the shot put with a mark of 49-2 1/4, while senior Tom Sutor was fourth in the hammer (175-11) to score for the Warriors in his final PSAC championship meet.
Sines picked up her second PSAC title, both in the shot put, coming two years apart. She won the 2007 indoor title before missing the 2007 outdoor championship and entire 2008 season due to injury, but won this year's championship with a mark of 41-8. She was second in the hammer at 161-7, with junior Emily Carothers finishing fifth at 151-2.
In other finals in the field events on Friday, ESU's men picked up 11 points in the high jump as junior Kenny Cardullo was fourth (6-4 3/4), senior Shane Burrows was fifth (6-3 1/2) and freshman Dan Johnson was seventh at the same height.
Johnson used a strong finish to place fifth in the decathlon with 5,946 points, placing second in the javelin and winning the 1500m run in the final two events. Junior Colin Feeney was second after the first day and finished 11th overall.
ESU goes into Saturday in the top half of both the men's and women's standings. The men are tied for third with Slippery Rock with 36 points, trailing second-place Lock Haven by four points, and the women are sixth with 22 points.
The rest of the action on Friday came in the preliminary rounds of the track events and was highlighted by the record-setting performances of McCloskey and the 4x100m relay team.
The junior sprinter entered the meet with the PSAC's top times in the 100m and 200m dashes and will go into Saturday's finals as the top seed in both events. He clocked a time of 10.53 seconds in the 100m dash, breaking the school record of 10.55 which was set by Chadd Braine in 1998, and led the field with a time of 21.50 in the 200m dash. He is already an NCAA provisional qualifier in both sprints and can qualify automatically with times of 10.45 in the 100 and 21.08 in the 200 in the finals.
McCloskey also anchored the 4x100 relay of sophomore Asher Ashfield and juniors Chris Reddick and Jeff McClenton to a time of 40.86 seconds, shattering the previous standard that they originally broke on April 18 at Eiler-Martin Stadium in 41.34. The Warriors have taken almost a full second off the record of 41.78 that had stood since 1978. ESU enters Saturday's final with the second-best time behind IUP.
Ashfield and Reddick also advanced to the finals in individual events. Ashfield ran a personal record of 10.74 and was third in the 100m, while Reddick was fourth in the 200m in 21.97 seconds. He just missed moving on in the 400m, falling three-hundredths of a second short in 48.83.
All-American hurdler Rusty Smith easily advanced in both the 110m and 400m hurdles, finishing fourth in the high hurdles (14.98) and fifth in the short hurdles (55.66). Freshman Brandon Hillman was the final qualifier for the finals in the 110m hurdles in 15.59. Freshman Sam Janssen is a finalist in the 800m run as well, knocking almost two seconds off his best time of the year to finish sixth in 1:56.19.
On the women's side, senior Katherine Doyle and sophomore Jasmine Johnson both moved on in their sprint events. Doyle was sixth in the 100m (12.53) and seventh in the 200m (25.68), while Johnson blazed her way to times of 25.26 in the 200, where she was fifth, and 56.79 in the 400, where she enters the finals seeded third. Her time in the 400 is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Johnson and Doyle also contributed to a season-best time of 48.10 in the 4x100m relay, along with freshman Alyssa Rupp and senior Amilee Schillinger.
The Warriors will have two finalists in the hurdles to round out Friday's qualifying action. Sophomore Brittany Knowles was eighth in the 100m hurdles (15.56), and junior Emily Hollick ran the 400m hurdles in 1:04.17 to PR by nearly two seconds and finish sixth heading into Saturday.
