MILLERSVILLE - Junior Andrew McCloskey put on a remarkable display, winning the 100 and 200-meter dashes in school-record times and anchoring the winning 4x100 relay team to a conference meet record, and was named the Men's Track and Field Most Outstanding Athlete of the Meet after leading East Stroudsburg University to a second-place finish at the 2009 PSAC Championships, which concluded Saturday at Millersville.
McCloskey ran an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 10.41 seconds in the 100 meters and lowered his school record to 21.30 in the 200 to become the first ESU men's athlete to win multiple individual titles since Lance Branyan captured the decathlon and javelin in 1991. He is the first Warrior to win either the 100 or 200 since 1978, and joins Elbert Price (1977) as the only athletes in school history to win the 100-200 double.
The 4x100 relay team of sophomore Asher Ashfield, juniors Chris Reddick and Jeff McClenton and McCloskey broke the PSAC Championship meet record in 40.83 seconds, edging IUP by four-hundredths of a second. The 1978 quartet of Chris Harrison, Gary Jackson, Woodrow Johnson and Dale Robertson won ESU's last PSAC title in the event and set the school record of 41.78 which stood until last month. Johnson was the men's 100m dash champion that year as well.
ESU won five individual events along with the 4x100 relay on the men's side, tying the school record for the most victories at a conference championship meet set in 1978, and finished second to Shippensburg, 143.5 to 137. The second-place finish is ESU's best since 1979 and the 137 points are another school record.
McCloskey was the men's track and most outstanding men's athlete of the meet and Mansfield's Mike Gray took field athlete of the meet honors on the men's side. For the women, IUP's Maddy Outman was the field athlete and overall honoree, with Millersville's Priscilla Jennings honored on the track. Slippery Rock won the women's championship with 179 points, while ESU was fifth with 79.5 points.
The Warriors broke a total of five school records on Saturday led by McCloskey's record haul. Junior Rusty Smith won the 110m hurdles in 14.41 seconds, lowering his previous mark of 14.46, and sophomore Jasmine Johnson shattered the women's 400m record in 56.06 seconds. Tawny Youtz held the record of 56.24 since 2005.
Junior Matt Gallup won his fourth straight PSAC pole vault championship (two indoors, two outdoors) with a height of 16-0 3/4 and joins teammate Paul Wagner as current ESU athletes with four conference titles. Wagner won the hammer throw with a meet record of 190-3 on Friday. They are two of the five men's athletes in school history with at least four individual PSAC titles, along with Branyan (4), distance runner Pete Heesen (4) and jumper Lenny Jenkins (7).
The ESU men scored in nearly every event that they had an athlete entered. On the track, Reddick was fourth in the 200 (21.66), Ashfield was sixth in the 100 (10.93), freshman Sam Janssen was sixth in the 800 (1:58.39) and freshman Brandon Hillman was eighth in the 110m hurdles (15.69). In the 3000m steeplechase, junior Kyle Weir was fifth (9:42.06) and sophomore Chris Zadroga was sixth (9:44.22).
Smith was the runner-up in the 400m hurdles (54.46) and his PSAC title in the 110m hurdles was his first victory outdoors and his second overall. He is one of 11 ESU athletes that are eligible to be selected for the NCAA Championships which will be held in two weeks at San Angelo, Texas. The field will be announced on Tuesday.
McCloskey (100m) and Gallup (pole vault) are automatic qualifiers, while McCloskey is qualified provisionally in the 200m, along with the 4x100 relay squad. Other provisional qualifiers are Smith (110m hurdles), Wagner and senior Tom Sutor (hammer throw), junior Drew Miller (triple jump), junior Kenny Cardullo and sophomore Bill Buis in the javelin, women's high jumpers Devyn Emerich, Lynn Mayer and Janelle Smith, and Jasmine Johnson in the 400m dash.
In the men's field events, Miller improved his NCAA provisional mark and was second in the triple jump at 48-4 3/4 and Hillman was fourth at 47-3 3/4. Wagner was sixth in the discus (150-3) coming off his win in the hammer and fifth-place finish in the shot put on Friday. Cardullo placed fifth in the javelin (194-9) and freshman Josh Hontz was seventh (191-8).
Johnson's school record and provisional time of 56.06 seconds to finish third in the 400m was the standout performance of the day on the track for the ESU women. She was also fifth in the 200m in 25.25, while senior Katherine Doyle was sixth in the 100 (12.51) and seventh in the 200 (25.63).
ESU was fourth in the women's 4x100 and 4x400 relays with Doyle anchoring both. Freshman Alyssa Rupp, Johnson, senior Amilee Schillinger and Doyle came home in a time of 48.57 in the finals of the 4x100 on Saturday, one day after running the third-fastest time in school history (48.10) in the prelims. Johnson, Schillinger, junior Trina Carito and Doyle clocked a season-best 3:53.93 in the 4x400 with Doyle anchoring in 56.6 seconds in her final collegiate race.
The Warriors had two hurdlers finish seventh in their respective events. Junior Emily Hollick ran a personal best in the 400 hurdles for the second straight day with a time of 1:03.98, and sophomore Brittany Knowles posted a time of 15.49 seconds in the 100 hurdles. Junior Niki Pasquarella was eighth in the 3000m steeplechase in 12:15.10.
ESU's strong contingent of high jumpers, including the three NCAA provisional qualifiers, took four of the top seven spots in the event. Emerich and Mayer tied for third at 5-5 3/4, Carito was fifth (5-3 3/4) and Smith tied for seventh (5-1 3/4).
Carito was also seventh in the triple jump with a season best of 36-6 1/4 after returning to the lineup this spring. The indoor champion in the triple jump and outdoor champion in the heptathlon a year ago, Carito was expected to miss her entire junior season due to injury but came back to score in two events and run on the 4x400 relay team for the Warriors.
Sophomore Allyson Cardullo placed third in the javelin (128-10) and won the event in six meets during the outdoor season. Sophomore Danielle Laws was sixth in the discus (126-4) and junior Amanda Sines was ninth after winning the shot put and finishing second in the hammer on Friday.
