EAST STROUDSBURG – Redshirt junior quarterback Matt Marshall had the second-most accurate passing day in school history, going 23-for-29 for 316 yards and three touchdowns, and redshirt junior Jeff Giglio caught seven passes for 148 yards and a score as East Stroudsburg University improved to 3-0 with a 45-31 win over Clarion on Saturday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

Marshall completed 79.3 percent of his passes, trailing only Tom Taylor (81.0, 17-21) at Southern Connecticut in 1989, and led an ESU offense that put up more than 400 yards of total offense for the third straight week.

Redshirt junior tailback Zach Krise ran for 93 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, just missing his third straight 100-yard game, after entering the game tied for fourth in Division II with 145.5 yards per game. Andre Castiglioni, ESU's second all-time leading rusher, opened the 2001 season with three consecutive 100-yard games.

Giglio, the conference leader in receiving yardage, went over 100 yards for the fourth time in his last five games and caught a 20-yard touchdown pass that gave ESU a 35-21 cushion with 35 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Warriors led 28-14 at halftime on an eight-yard TD pass from Marshall to redshirt senior Sam Shuman with two seconds left in the half, capping an 11-play, 60-yard drive that took just 1:37.

Clarion intercepted Marshall's first pass of the day on the second play from scrimmage and was in the end zone seven plays later on a 23-yard pass from Tyler Huether (19-for-33, 307 yards, 3 TD) to tight end Matt Foradora.

Marshall was nearly perfect after that and the ESU defense had a fourth-and-one stop inside the 20-yard line on Clarion's next possession. Marshall hit Giglio for an 86-yard gain to the one-yard line on the next play, and Krise found the end zone to tie the game at 7-7.

Senior safety Nicholas Artinger had the first of his two interceptions to stop Clarion's next drive, and Marshall engineered a scoring drive that culminated with a toss to tight end Willie Bell for his first career touchdown.

Redshirt sophomore linebacker Taylor Cave capped the Warriors' scoring blitz with a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown 1:57 into the second quarter that gave ESU a 21-7 lead. Clarion forced a Marshall fumble late in the quarter that Huether turned into a 20-yard TD pass to Matt Ward, but the Warriors came right back with their final scoring drive of the half and Marshall's TD pass to Shuman.

Clarion cut the deficit to 28-21 on a five-yard run by tailback Alfonso Hoggard (19 carries, 68 yards) with 5:43 left in the third quarter. Once again Marshall came right back, going 5-for-5 including a seven-yard pass to redshirt junior wide receiver Ed Kiser on fourth-and-five, and Giglio caught a pass at the 10-yard line and turned up the sideline for his TD grab late in the third.

Robert Mamula hit a 45-yard field goal for Clarion with 13:27 on the clock in the fourth quarter to make the score 35-24. Redshirt junior fullback Brent Jones plunged in from one-yard out after Marshall and Kiser hooked up for a 47-yard gain to the two and ESU led 42-24.

Redshirt junior kicker Drew Reinhard stretched the lead to 45-24 with a 22-yard field goal, and Clarion closed the scoring with a 12-yard pass from Huether to Jacques Robinson with 1:01 remaining. Robinson had 17 catches through the first two games and caught five passes for 65 yards on Saturday night.

Giglio averaged 127.5 yards receiving in his last four games and has caught 20 passes for 357 yards (119.0 yards per game) and two touchdowns this season. Kiser had four catches for 68 yards, redshirt freshman Jordan Hallman caught four balls for 43 yards one week after scoring his first career touchdown and Marshall spread the ball around to eight different receivers.

Marshall improved to 5-0 as a starter for the Warriors, throwing for 296.4 yards per game and 14 touchdowns. His quarterback rating of 165.8 through the first three games is just shy of his 168.3 rating last year, and he has completed more than 70 percent of his passes (63-for-89, 70.7) for 803 yards and seven TD in 2009.

Redshirt junior outside linebacker Matt Freed had 10 tackles and a sack. Junior linebacker Kevin Schafer had nine tackles and outside linebacker Mark Kalo had seven. Artinger picked off two passes, giving him six for his career, and Cave's interception was the third of his career and second in as many games.

Redshirt junior defensive end Jeff Case had five tackles, two for a loss and a sack and has 15 tackles (4.5 TFL), two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery this season.

ESU travels to Shippensburg for its PSAC East opener next Saturday in a rematch of last year's 44-41 overtime win for the Warriors at Eiler-Martin Stadium. ESU has opened the season 3-0 six times since 2000 and is 53-4 since the start of the decade when scoring at least 30 points.
